@ChrisRamsey60 You can’t test drive a real pickup truck anymore, they don’t make them. They make luxury cars with a big price tag, camouflaged in a truck looking body.
What will you do when you can’t get beef? Farm land is being bought up by billionaires and corporations at an astounding rate. 85% of all beef is being processed and monopolized by 4 companies. Support your local farmers and ranchers. Buy beef direct and support the family farms before we all disappear.
This boomer will say: Where in the hell could a young man work as a high school teacher, his wife stay home and raise kids and still afford a house a few decades ago? I started teaching in TX in 1991, $17,700 salary as a high school teacher. First house purchased in 1986, 12% interest. There was no way my wife didn’t have to work. Teachers in TX then had no health insurance and we had none. I agree things are hard now, but don’t think it’s always been so easy.
@MattWalshBlog Tax rate vs tax paid on one’s living standard and wealth is two different things. Our tax code is written by millionaires to protect millionaires. PERIOD!
Boomers aren’t as old as you think, look it up. Millions will only hit 60 this year. Millions upon millions spent their lives, as I did, in a public sector job and certainly aren’t driving fancy cars or sailing on yachts. Quit demonizing whole generations of people for the excesses of others.
@txsalth2o@Landonicus If it is illegal, and the dogs are chipped as you say, then of course you have a duty to report it to the game warden. He will find the hunters and ticket them.
If a car was built before about 2010, has low miles, is in very good condition and you keep it that way, it will appreciate in value. There is a growing majority of people who search and pay premium for these cars as opposed to the over computerized, bells and whistles, pieces of crap they are pushing on us today. I don’t own a truck newer than 2009. Those diesels will go forever, if and when it needs attention, the bodies have been well maintained and it is much cheaper to rebuild the motor than pay $100,000 for one of these new pieces of sh*t.
@ParadigmGauge@LilaGraceRose Slavery was not unconstitutional. Have you never heard of the 3/5ths Compromise. Do people go to school today? Doesn’t mean it was right, but get the facts straight.
They could probably fire them all and have automated ports up and working within 3 weeks. The union is fighting a losing battle against technology, if they had a better union leader, they would recognize that and be working for extended pay for those replaced and education benefits to find new work. They won’t stop automation.
I was born in the 50s. One thing that has changed completely is the division in the country. The political parties didn’t differ as much back then. Both had the same basic goals, their biggest difference was how we would get there. JFK was hated in many conservative areas as a New England liberal, but he was actually pretty conservative. I do think the best days ended with the smartphone, I enjoyed the early days of the computer and internet, but not anymore. As a retired teacher, I started seeing major changes in the kids, especially boys, starting around 2007 or so.
I would go back in heartbeat. Life was much better then. Even in the high inflation days of the 70s and 80s, life was better. The internet has done more harm than good. Computers are great in many ways, but I had no problem typing long term papers in college on a typewriter. It wasn’t hard ordering things, pick up the phone and call your order in to Sears. We used to order our baby chicks from the Sears Farm Catalog. Starter homes were being built, a person could afford a house. My first house was 12% interest, but it was a good starter home and affordable even with what is considered high interest today.
@RepMikeCollins Just for comparison, a starting teacher in Texas makes $33,600 a year. With 20 years of experience, pay is $54,540. That’s Texas scale. Large urban districts pay more.
That’s as stupid as saying Mexico could when a war against America. If we were losing against Mexico, we would use a nuclear bomb and you know it. Push Putin in a corner and see what happens. There has never been a doubt of how this will end. Ukraine will give up its Russian territory that it was bombing for over a year before Russia invaded.
100%. As a retired teacher and administrator, I will tell you that the best loved teachers always have control of their class and except for very serious situations, handle their own discipline. My daughter is taking education classes in college now, unfortunately, just like when I was in college, they are doing their best not to teach new teachers these skills, nor showing how to do by example. She said that students were giving individual presentations, it got close to the end of class and other students starting ignoring the presentation and getting their bags ready to leave. The professor did nothing, didn’t take the teaching example she was presented with. My daughter said that this professor has never taught in a public school. Pitiful. No college professor should be in the education department that hasn’t taught public school, period.
The strong survive is the way the world works. Comanches can claim Texas, but of course they stole it from the Apaches, etc. Palestinians can claim their land was stolen, the Jews can claim they have a right to the land, etc… but it all comes down to might makes right. May not be fair, but life and humanity is not fair. The strong survive. If a nation, group of people, etc. can take land and hold it, it’s theirs and then as long as they are the victors, then they write the history. Doesn’t make it fair or right, but that’s how it works. I don’t have a dog in this fight.
While there is no perfect governor, give credit to Greg Abbott in Texas. He has done the one thing that must be done if we are to save this country, that is, he has stood up to the federal government over the right of Texas to defend its border. In my opinion, he should do even more, but I give him credit for doing what most governors are not doing, that is, trying to enforce and grow states’ rights. States standing up to federal government overreach is the only way we will save this nation.
