Take a moment to reflect on the events 79 years prior on this day. This day marks the largest seaborne invasion ever attempted in history, with over 2 million Allied troops descending on Normandy.
Over 200,000 German casualties were suffered along with 209,000 fallen Allies, 18,700 of those were Canadian 🇨🇦
A very expensive victory.
18 year old sailor, Tom Gunning of the HMCS Cape Breton said " it's almost impossible to describe the awesome power of it' at the sight of seeing 6,900 sea-faring ships approaching the coastline, from the English Chanel.
“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”
~Winston Churchill
#DDay79 #Remembering 😞🇨🇦
On June 6, 1944, 14,000 Canadian troops, including the First Canadian Army, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force attacked the beaches of Normandy as part of an Allied force to secure a critical bridgehead for the Allied invasion.
The battles for the beachhead were crucial for the success of “Operation Overlord”, the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. In a few short hours, Canadians suffered 1,074 casualties including 359 killed.
Today, we honour and remember the brave men and women who fought for freedom and supported operations on this fateful day in Normandy.
We will forever be grateful for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great country and freedom around the world.
