The remarkable Richard Jefferies features as a benchmark in Reconnection: Fixing our Broken Relationship with Nature - out 4th April https://t.co/g4ugYF8cYu
Jefferies was an advocate of outdoor learning for young children: “among green grass and yellow wheat – among trees – by hills and streams ...they shall find a secret, a knowledge not to be found in books...They will forget their books. They will never forget the grassy fields."
The South Downs and Beachy Head, East Sussex, were settings in Jefferies' spiritual autobiography 'The Story of My Heart' (1883). After he had left his native Wiltshire, these spaces took him away from civilization and closer to undisturbed countryside.
The trees are getting ready to perform one of nature’s greatest magic tricks 🪄🤹🏼 Their leaf buds are tiny bundles of colour, all packed full of the promise of spring, and a wonderful source of winter joy 🙏

Hearty and well-deserved congratulations go to the six finalists who have been shortlisted for the Richard Jefferies Award for the best nature-writing published and nominated in 2022: @LeifBersweden @leeinthelakes @BenRawlence @guyshrubsole @malachytallack & Annie Proulx.
A lovely, encouraging, illuminating feature in here on landscape & nature writing & the importance of prizes such as @wainwrightprize & @RJefferiesSoc on raising awareness & expanding the genre; thank you @simonwhaley for asking the questions of me & writing it!
The man in the sketch is Harold Adams. He founded the Richard Jefferies Society, and worked in the Parks department in the town, mostly in the Town Gardens. He would have known and loved the tree that is now the latest sculpture of Jefferies. 🥰
@Melindola@RHACC_College I believe it was 93 trees aka destruction of broad leaved woodland aka the nation’s priority habitat, loss of a badger sett resulting in high impact on the adjacent @Jefferiesauthor bird sanctuary
The shortlist for the best nature writing published in 2022 and nominated for the Richard Jefferies Award will be announced on Monday 23rd January at noon. Good luck to all the candidates on the longlist. https://t.co/u8QXrneeyI

Pleased to have just published an article on the nature writing of Richard Jefferies, W.H. Hudson and Edward Thomas, exploring Raymond Williams' critique of their work. I get 50 free online copies - so am sharing here, in case of interest to anyone: https://t.co/FjpXQ2Tnfm
"If you wish your children to think deep things — to know the holiest emotions, take them to the woods and hills, and give them the freedom of the meadows."
