Supervised Consumption Services at Sheldon Chumir Health Centre are operated by Alberta Health Services. Two years ago, I shared concerns related to public safety in the area, the impact on neighbours, and the draw on City of Calgary and Calgary Police resources with Provincial officials. Service providers and the data tell us one centralized site is not the answer. Drug poisonings are happening throughout the city. Since 2022, Calgarians have been waiting for the provincial government to offer additional or alternate solutions, given that health and addictions are provincial responsibilities.
Today, I reinforce this message and urgency required to address this issue.
Never give up on helping someone you know or care about. Don’t write them off, don’t blow them off because you’re busy. It’s ALWAYS worth a check-in … you never know when they will be ready to do the hard work and change their life.
I've known Randy for over 20 years — we were on the streets together. In 2018, after I achieved recovery, I was walking through the DTES going to work and I saw him on the other side of the street doing his thing, getting high.
I wasn't going to stop for a chat — I needed to get to work. But I knew then that the illicit drug supply was getting increasingly more deadly. A voice in my head said "Go back and ask him if he wants help. You might not get this chance again.”
I went back. I said “Hey” and gave him the half hug & handshake. He said: "Doesn't your friend own recovery houses? I need to get the hell outta here.” Long story short I called my friend and he came down and picked Randy up to start his recovery journey.
This is my friend Randy today, in recovery, sober and working with people who struggle just like he once did!
I could not be more proud of him!

The journalist martyr Samer Abu Daqqa, during his interview with his family months ago in Belgium, mentioned that despite Al Jazeera offering to relocate his work to Belgium, he refused to reside outside Gaza. He chose to work in Gaza to convey the suffering of his people and expose the crimes of the occupation, until he was assassinated by the Israeli warplane.
Samer Abu Daqqa, an Al Jazeera channel cameraman and friend of ours, was murdered after lying on the ground covered in blood for more than five hours without being treated because the occupation forces prevented medical teams from reaching him. Nasser arrived at the hospital as dead.

If we take a sense of universal altruism seriously, where is there room to have enemies? Our real enemies and the enemies of humanity are negative emotions like anger and hatred. Indeed, people who are dominated by powerful negative emotions should be objects of our compassion.
