Tennessee Head Coach @KarenWeekly on programs sacrificing an athletes education for softball.
“It’s a travesty if any athlete leaves college and they don’t feel prepared to do anything but their sport” 📚⚖️🥎
COACHES: It's important to TELL our players daily that we love them. It's also important to SHOW them daily that we love them. They need to KNOW that we love them. Most of us say we love our players but sometimes don't demonstrate it.
What do players hate about coaches?
Subbed after mistake
Contradicting themselves
Playing faves
Not abiding by own rules
Not caring about players as people
Not listening
Only in it for wins
Boring repetitive drills/practices
Micromanaging
Constant lectures
Comparisons
Dishonesty
@CoachJonBeck “it’s hard to sit on the bench even when they show highest character, don’t complain, compete, work their ass off but still sit bc coaches play favorites? When are we going to talk about the ugly yet VERY real? It’s not always about the athlete. There are lots of bad coaches too.
COACHES: Coaching today's generation of kids is about relationships and connecting with them. Players will still "run through walls" for you if they know, like, or trust you. It's not enough that you care about them. They have to know that you care about them.
COACHES: Whatever you condone in your program is what you should be prepared to own and accept in your program. Don't be surprised when you get the very things you allow. What you accept, permit, reward, allow, or reinforce in your program becomes your culture.
Can we maybe get better announcers @FloSoftball instead of men that just want to hear themselves talk???? How about hiring women announcers for a women’s sport!!!
Coaches: Create great relationships with parents by:
Being honest with parents
Being honest with their kids
Not discussing other players
Not accepting armchair coaching
Treating players fairly
Holding their kids accountable
Treating kids as people first
Being a great role model
You will never be able to motivate a player you don’t know. Asking them how their day went at practice is not really knowing them. Ask about their family, their history, their hopes & dreams. And when they answer, you fully LISTEN. If they really know you care, they will care!
it’s the coaches. they love you when they want you, once they have you if you’re not their “best” they don’t care. It’s going from feeling like you have someone who believes in you to someone who doesn’t- athletes can deal with not playing, they can’t deal with feeling worthless
