From what I'm gathering in my discussions, Anthropic et al wants the Pope (and others) to declare AI agents conscious so that they can be factored into ethical frameworks/decision making. Meaning: the goal of AI corporations is that AI agents be seen as peers of humans. 1/14
Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship yesterday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas during the 1960s.
Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes before purchasing without adhering to certain conditions. For instance, they had to try on clothes over their clothes, put on protective covers when trying on hats, or weren't allowed to make returns once they purchased clothes and brought them home. These policies stemmed from the racist fear that white customers would refuse merchandise previously worn by Black shoppers.
The downtown Neiman Marcus flagship was one of the first major Dallas businesses that broke with these practices. In 1961, the company desegregated its Zodiac Room, a swanky restaurant frequented by Dallas elites. Neiman Marcus later welcomed Black shoppers without restrictions. These victories were achieved through the efforts of Civil Rights activists, along with support from Neiman Marcus president Stanley Marcus, who was an early advocate for desegregation in Dallas. The Neiman Marcus store manager purportedly warned Marcus that he would ruin his business — and indeed, some shoppers closed their accounts — but he stuck with his decision.
At the time of the flagship's closure, the Main Street store had been open for 112 years.
SMITH: “They were fired illegally for doing their jobs. It makes 🇺🇸 less safe… I’ve never seen anything like it.”
COONS: “Did Biden/Garland try to influence you?”
SMITH: “NO… and one reason Trump couldn’t take power is REPUBLICANS (Pence, etc) who stood up and put 🇺🇸 first.”
I guess I’m old-fashioned but I think if you accuse someone in Congress of committing perjury based on your own confusion of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Atlantic Hawks, you ought to take a minute and apologize.
Two years ago the reflecting pool was reflecting, the East Wing existed and was welcoming visitors to the People’s House, and the Kennedy Center was financially stable and artistically thriving. Gasoline was semi-affordable and USAID was saving human lives all over the world.
Go vote. We don’t have to live like this.
“To invoke God’s name in order to justify violence or oppression is to profane His name,” he said. “Nothing that disfigures human dignity can claim to be inspired by God.”
We can allow ourselves to be deceived when we are vulnerable, hungry, enthralled, and given hope—especially when we are led by one we assume to be good who is, in fact, a prowling wolf.
"The value of persons, however, does not depend on what they achieve or produce ... The fundamental dignity of each person, therefore, is neither acquired nor earned, nor does it need to be justified ... The dignity of every human person can be described as infinite."
