Today on the Science of Reading-What I Should Have Learned in College, the brilliant Holly Lane posted an insightful comment about “implementation fidelity” , one of the new buzzy words in education. Don’t miss it.
Here are my thoughts about implementation fidelity.
The New “F” Word
I have been seeing the same focus on “fidelity” across the nation. Perhaps a bit risqué, but I have been calling it “The New F word”. The question is, fidelity to what? When we ask (or demand) fidelity to a program, curriculum, or instructional practices that are not aligned with empirical evidence and in many cases are in fact counter to it, we know what the outcome will be.
Louisa Moats stated long ago, “Teachers teach kids, not programs”, and central to that statement is embedded the principle that it is teachers with deep knowledge of language, literacy, and pedagogy working together with school leaders and families to make informed decisions about what is being taught and how it is being taught.
There has been an explosion of information about the “science of reading” in recent years. We have all seen the countless personal hours teachers have spent learning about language, literacy, and instructional practices aligned with evidence, and they are asking well-informed questions about the “instructional materials” they are being asked to implement with fidelity. Why are we trying to silence their voices with this new “F” word?
Teachers are asking important questions and in too many cases we are asking them to shut up, close their classroom doors, and just do it, when they now know, it’s wrong. This isn’t a license to go off on your own, create your own curriculum adventure and choose your favorite instructional practice. But it is an invitation, for educators and school leaders to engage in communities of practice to make informed decisions based on evidence, TOGETHER. If there is fidelity to anything, it should be fidelity to the EVIDENCE.
If you've screened your kindergarten class for First Sound Fluency & have some students below/well below benchmark, these activities can help support your 1:1 or small group targeted instruction. After a brief intervention mine are now all @ benchmark. 🎉

Here’s another strategy I love: Quote It, Draw It, Explain it! This one gets students super engaged with a text and I loved having students share with partners or the whole class!

I was inspired by @MJLiben & @LibenDavid to try structured journals so @ONlit_social designed a template - approved by the Libens - and I tested it out with a group of Grade 7s. Will definitely use again!
