@kimbo325 We’ll survive. Every time you feel like that, pause for a moment and remember that that’s how they want you to feel - they want you to think voting is pointless, that they’re going to rig it anyway.
They’re going to try, but we aren’t going to let them.
When Republicans inevitably blame mental health and not the guns for yet another school shooting - kindly remind them that 205 of them voted AGAINST a bill to expand school-based mental health services.
I will start year 33/34 as a full-time classroom teacher next week.
Late summer and the start of school always make me reflect on my many years of teaching and this year is no different. I've been thinking a lot about what I've learned from all the classes, students, lessons, PDs, and the mindless minutia of education in America. I've had this list for about 3 years, it's changed and grown. Here's the latest iteration of "What I've Learned from Teaching Teens."
1. Never lie to the kids. Someone once told me that kids can smell BS a mile away, and it’s true. Tell the truth.
2. Build a culture of learning, be eager to teach new things. It’s infectious. Kids gravitate to the authentic.
3. Learn kids' names and then use them often.
4. Learn to say kids' names the way their parents do unless the student prefers another.
5. Number your assignments in the assignment names for the entire year. You’ll thank me later for this one.
6. Kids will surprise you if you pay attention. They’re sorta amazing.
7. They are kids and do shit kids do. It’s not personal, so don’t take it that way.
8. If the kids get curious about something, then follow that curiosity. It’s where the most effective learning happens.
9. Let them think they are pulling you off task and they will be curious all the time.
10. Don’t fart in class

@edtechmathteach I’m so sorry. I don’t know you, but I’m on a similar journey with my mom. Brain cancer (glioblastoma), no cure, just buying time with surgery (chemo and rad starting soon). Cherish every moment you have together, reminiscence on the good times, make new memories together. ❤️
@MarkCoffin14@amazon Thank you for the opportunity to share! This year will be my 21st year teaching high school science in Oklahoma! https://t.co/ZwON614iRA
