One of Obsession’s smartest twists is that the monster isn’t Nikki, it’s Bear. At first, he appears to be the harmless “nice guy” hopelessly in love with his longtime friend. But after being rejected, he uses a One Wish Willow to override Nikki’s free will and make her love him more than anyone else in the world.
What follows isn’t a romance. It’s a supernatural form of abuse. As Nikki’s forced devotion spirals into obsession, violence, and psychological torment, Bear slowly realizes the horrifying consequences of his wish. Yet even when given opportunities to confront what he’s done, he repeatedly prioritizes his own comfort and validation over Nikki’s suffering.
Behind the scenes, director Curry Barker deliberately framed Nikki’s terrifying transformation as a symptom of the wish rather than her true personality. This is most evident in the disturbing sleep-talking scenes, where the real Nikki briefly breaks through and begs Bear for help, reminding viewers that she’s a victim trapped inside the version of herself he created. The film’s greatest horror isn’t the gore or jump scares. It’s watching a seemingly ordinary young man refuse to let go of a fantasy, no matter how many lives it destroys.
people hated on this so fucking much without even watching the movie and realizing this is a scene that symbolizes her being able to recover after attempting suicide.
