@vec2vec2 Thanks! There's two effects here: shadow ray and diffuse lighting. The shadow ray can be softened by casting multiple rays and spreading their angles.
The diffuse lighting gets smoother because the normals are smoothed: https://t.co/CwCjvjubZK
too much fun at the beach. I use 3 techniques to make voxel items smoothish:
1) estimate normals based on neighbors
2) smooth estimated normals based on more neighbors
3) screen space normal smoothing at each pixel (toggled in the last few seconds here)
every face of a voxel is shaded the same color, so top looks no different than side

@jere_codes@TrentTrenters0n@IsThisA3DModel Children are really easy to beat in arguments, but you are pouting and giving up because I’m right and you’re wrong and stupid and can’t do anything and want the world to treat you special for have a server rack do mediocre shit for you.
“Shrek” was a launch title for the original Xbox that I worked on 25 years ago. It was the first shipped game to use a technique called Deferred Shading. It wasn’t my first 3D game, though: I wrote Sandbox Studios’ software rasterizer and D3D7 renderers.

@UBadler Yea everything is handled by compute shaders. The voxel grid is 256x256x128 currently but I want to expand it if possible. Beyond that, there's no separate draw distance.
It tries to blend seamlessly with a fake sand plane and ocean behind the grid.
full screen. it's subtle, but I'm learning that screen space normal smoothing (second half of video) can be applied to everything
of course, twitter's compression kind of ruins it
ok since x video compression sucks, here's a still image demo. wet sand ball and metal ball.
both made of voxels (the sand one is 32x32x32).
screen space normal smoothing off (left) vs on (right)
@TheSpaceChamp@Jade_shitpost Weird flex. The thread you decided to comment on was about reddit.
Feel free to share the game with us so that we can learn!
@boobs_scary Not to say anything negative about 25 year old programmers (i was once one). But they've got very few data points.
You string together 1 or 2 bouts of good luck and you think the world is all roses. You haven't given the world a chance to kick you in the teeth.
