I can’t stop thinking about how many legendary sports careers we never got because the player landed on the wrong team. Sam Darnold had to endure being called a BUST LOSER FRAUD for YEARS and probably knew deep down in his heart that wasn’t true but there was no way to prove it within the construct of modern sports until he had the opportunity to go to consecutive competent orgs, an opportunity that only existed *because* the previous failure had occurred, and now he’s basically exactly the stud people projected him to be out of college. There are plenty of athletes across all sports who never get that second or third opportunity after being crushed by the weighty failure, honed over decades of incompetence, of the original team. Just remarkable how we think of people being “winners” or “losers” and in the end it has just as much to do with their surroundings as it does anything innate within the athlete.
