An Awkward Question About Tamil Nadu From My Dutch Colleagues

Last night, I was out with my Dutch colleagues when a casual conversation about access to healthcare suddenly turned into a discussion about politics.

Dutch people usually don’t prefer to talk about politics since they feel it somewhat end up in fights and spoils the fun environment, but somehow, we ended up discussing how people decide whom to vote for.

Their answers were mixed. Some supported the right wing, while others leaned far left. But everyone agreed on one thing: beyond ideology, they look at whether a candidate is capable of governing, bringing development and handling the current situation in the country.

Then, naturally, the question came back to me

Their knowledge of Indian politics mostly stopped with Modi. They have no knowledge about Tamil Nadu politics. They did not even know the difference between a Chief Minister and the state government, and the Prime Minister and the central government. So I gave them a quick explanation.

Then they asked, Who is the Chief Minister of your state now?

I said, He is an actor turned politician. He has no previous political or administrative experience. His popularity in cinema gave him strong political support, and he eventually became the Chief Minister.”

Almost everyone immediately reacted:

Oh gosh! Haven’t you seen Ukraine? Zelenskyy was also an actor who entered politics promising change and development. Look at the situation there now.”

Then came a question that genuinely left me speechless:

Does your state lack education? Is that why people choose someone purely from cinema popularity?

In India, the BJP (and INC) were found by Delhi High Court in 2014 to have broken the FCRA by illegally accepting money from Vedanta, a UK based company, and the court actually wanted the ECI to proceed against them. The “anti-corruption’ PM @narendramodi got Jaitley to smuggle in a ‘get out of jail free’ card in the 2016 budget—via a retrospective amendment to the FCRA which said that so long as the foreign company's ownership of an Indian entity is within the foreign investment limits prescribed by the government for that sector, the company would be treated as "Indian" for the purposes of the FCRA. Thus, the illegal donations which the BJP had received since 2010 in total violation of the FCRA all got exempted from prosecution. Since the Congress was also a beneficiary of this retrospective cleansing, the party kept quiet.

मां अभी बीमार हैं, बेटे ने 4 साल से बिना एक भी प्रीमियम मिस किए Niva Bhupa का हेल्थ इंश्योरेंस भरा था फिर भी जरूरत के वक्त क्लेम नहीं मिल रहा।

4 साल में कभी क्लेम नहीं लिया।

मां को प्लेटलेट्स कम होने की वजह से Fortis Gurugram में एडमिट कराना पड़ा।

फैमिली डॉक्टर से लेकर अस्पताल के डॉक्टर तक,

सबने लिख कर दिया कि पेशेंट को भर्ती करना जरूरी था।

खुद डॉक्टर ने रिपोर्ट में मेंशन किया कि ये केस कैशलेस क्लेम के लिए पूरी तरह वैलिड है।

फिर भी Niva Bhupa ने क्लेम रिजेक्ट कर दिया, ये कहकर कि भर्ती करने की जरूरत ही नहीं थी।

जब खुद हॉस्पिटल और डॉक्टर पेशेंट को भर्ती करने के लिए बोल रहे हैं

तो इंश्योरेंस कंपनी किस हैसियत से कह रही है कि जरूरत नहीं थी।

बेटा पूरी रात हॉस्पिटल के कॉरिडोर में बैठा रहा, मां अंदर बेड पर लेटी रही और कंपनी के जवाब का इंतजार होता रहा।

आखिर में जेब से 1 लाख रुपया से ज्यादा कैश भरने पड़े, जबकि क्लेम अमाउंट सिर्फ 66 हजार के आसपास था।

4 साल प्रीमियम भरा और मां की तकलीफ में साथ खड़ी होनी चाहिए थी जो कंपनी को उसने मुंह मोड़ लिया।

अगर ज़रूरत के वक्त कंपनी साथ नहीं देगी तो इतने साल का प्रीमियम भरने का मतलब ही क्या था।

@swatiatrest @MasalaBai I agree partially but keep doing regularly. Even if you can catch one, it is sufficient. Do it consistently and we can eradicate the practice. Remember once smoking on trains was rampant, but has been successfully stopped.

- this was like a heritage for residents
- 2 more trees nearby were cut too
- residents were shocked to see this & came out to protest.

Was this tree cut because the under construction buildings demanded?

If this was done as per law, why was this tree chopped off at mid night?

For 3 decades, nobody had a problem with this tree, infact this tree has given shade to countless people and this is a disastrous way to let the tree go off this way for real estate needs.

Data privacy in India is a joke. Every third person knows exactly when my car insurance is due for renewal and has my phone number. Each year, I get 100s of messages and calls from different companies selling car insurance. (Yes, DND, etc is done!).

Most of the rest of India with their nicer and faster trains don't really understand what we go through in Keralam. This is the condition of most of our MEMU trains.
Discarded EMU rakes that reached end of life after running for 20 years on the Chennai Suburban network. Southern Railway promptly shunts all the oldest coaches in the zone to run in Keralam. This particular rake was built in 2002 and is now 24 years old!
What I can't capture here is the smell - That musty stink of decades of wet, rusting steel mixed with god knows what else. This train would've been considered a toxic health hazard in any other country. Okay - we don't have many industries but we are human too and deserve to travel in a minimum level of dignity. @gmsrailway @railminindia @vdsatheesan @AshwiniVaishnaw

In St. Claret Church cemetery in Sahanagar, Purba Bardhaman district, WB her body had already been lowered into the grave. The mob arrived and took out the body from the grave.

Father Samuel Hembrom told The Indian Express that the mob demanded “to see the papers for the burial ground”.

Father told them give us some time to get those papers from the church. They refused to listen. The mourners were also allegedly assaulted.

The body had to be taken to another cemetery in Bardhaman town.

The Father said he sent a complaint to the SP and BDO by email. “Nothing happened.”

However, The SP, Purba Bardhaman, Pushpa, told The Indian Express - “The woman who died did not belong to the area. So people objected."

SP also said: “I don’t think there was an assault. However, I will check with the local police station."

Journalist Sheetal P Singh’s video attempts to expose a horrifying market where, according to the allegations presented, young girls—some reportedly as young as 9–10—are bought, sold and sexually exploited.

The allegations go even further: girls being subjected to hormonal injections, forced pregnancies, and the trafficking of their babies, turning both mother and child into commodities.

And perhaps the most chilling question is this:

How can such a racket allegedly operate openly, even in the vicinity of police stations, unless powerful people are looking the other way—or actively protecting it?

If these allegations are true, this is not merely a crime story.
It is a complete collapse of policing, administration and political accountability.

Children are not commodities.
Women are not commodities.
Babies are not commodities.

Every allegation of a network involving traffickers, officials or political figures must be independently and ruthlessly investigated, and those responsible—regardless of their position or connections—must face the full force of the law.

A society that can look away while children are bought, abused, impregnated and traded has lost its moral compass.
