This happened to my grandfather, his first and last name were changed when he came through Ellis Island to make them more pronounceable in English (he was from Sweden). This wasn’t a clerical error but intentional and probably policy at the time, which was around 1915.
My grandfather had long hair, earrings and wooden shoes, all of which he ditched shortly after arriving in NYC.
Many immigrants were grateful to come to the US from poor countries and assimilate, to fit in and not stand out from the locals.
This is no longer true of immigrants today, with predictable results.
