We Need To Talk About Anxiety -
A Thread
There are just so many children & young people struggling with anxiety at present.
Many parents are struggling with their anxious children.
Many schools are struggling with anxious pupils.
It's a situation that won't fix itself.

@SteveReedMP I am a constituent and I emailed you twice in the last year to invite you to my house for a coffee to meet my 14 yr old daughter who isn’t able to go to school owing to SEN needs. I didn’t hear back. Please reply so you are well informed about #ghostchildren.
Let’s talk about ghost children. Pre-lockdown, in the halcyon days when we didn’t know what an airborne novel virus looked like or threat it posed to our stripped, stretched, cut public services, working families, hot-housed kids, pressure-cooker schools, 1m kids were absent.
Hi @jonpayates@YouthEndowFund please take care not to conflate children absent from school with children who are cause of antisocial behaviour. #ghostchildren are very often facing severe complex SEN challenges which schools are failing/ill-equipped to support. Like my daughter.
SP view: ‘The pandemic was straw that broke the back of children, families, schools, services who were only just functioning pre-2020. Covid lit a trauma fuse Government refused to prepare for & ignored.’ @cleaskopeliti @schooltruth https://t.co/3dtNOdGOpJ
@teamsquarepeg@cleaskopeliti@schooltruth Totally right. Covid is a convenient excuse for institutions to pop this in the ‘exceptional circumstances’ bin and offers a simple hook for media to tell the story without digging into the situation pre-covid. For us covid was a welcome break from school trauma.
@teamsquarepeg Covid is seen as enabling children to see that there was the option of not going to school. That’s a convenient hook for a story and excuse for institutions. In my case problems well before Covid. Closure of schools was a temporary healing time, didn’t make anything worse.
Terrifying stories of child abuse highlights safeguarding importance of schools in ‘Britain’s Lost Children’ - new podcast. But using children’s commissioner @ChildrensComm stats in intro is sensationalist & misleading when majority of children not in school are SEN. @dmaudsley
@teamsquarepeg@Terri_White@Sophie_Don@dmaudsley@NotFineinSchool Horrified by Ep1 framing that fails to mention SEN crisis. As parent of ASD child I am feeling demonised by this opening, but my child CAN’T attend school and yet is not getting effective help. Education Health Care tribunal system is overrun as councils not meeting needs.
