Her owner is Maria Grant, a mother in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

About three weeks ago, Maria heard a knock at the door just before 9 p.m.

She opened it and was immediately struck in the head.

"He's just hitting me over the head with a hammer, and all I'm feeling is the hits and then the waves of blood coming down my face and he didn't stop," Maria told WCCO.

She knew the man. He had done yard work for her.

He had walked her dog.

That night, she says, he showed up wearing a wig.

Maria was on the floor, bleeding, when he turned toward the staircase.

Her young children were asleep upstairs.

That is when Athena went lunged at the man.

"She was biting him," Maria said. "And I could see the bl00d coming out of his legs from his jeans."

He never made it up the stairs.

According to charging documents, he fled the scene and showed up at a hospital... with dog bite wounds.

Maria ended up with SIX STAPLES in her head, but thankfully her children slept through the whole thing.

"This is the closest I've ever been to de*th," Maria said.

"I'm grateful she was there... I don't think I'd be here without her. I think I'll be laying over there on the floor."

The man is now charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, and there is an active warrant out for him.

Maria is healing. Her kids are safe.

And a 7-year-old pit bull did what she was born to do.

Ya la habían baleado dos veces antes. Se dejó fotografiar con las cicatrices y dijo que no se iba a ir.

Se llamaba María Santos Gorrostieta Salazar. Era médica, con doctorado, y fue presidenta municipal de Tiquicheo, Michoacán, de 2008 a 2011.

En octubre de 2009 la atacaron a balazos junto a su esposo, José Sánchez Chávez. Él murió ahí. Ella llegó al hospital con varios impactos y salió viva. Tres meses después la volvieron a atacar, ahora con rifles de asalto. Volvió a sobrevivir.

En lugar de esconderse, se dejó tomar fotos mostrando las cicatrices que le quedaron en el cuerpo, y dijo públicamente que no se iba del estado y que no iba a dejar el cargo.

En Tierra Caliente, en esos años, ser alcalde de un municipio chico significaba escoger un bando o pagar. Ella dijo enfrente de todos que no iba a hacer ninguna de las dos cosas.

Terminó su periodo. Siguió viviendo en Michoacán. Siguió llevando a sus hijos a la escuela.

El 12 de noviembre de 2012, como a las ocho y media de la mañana, iba llevando a su hija por una avenida transitada del norte de Morelia.

Dos hombres salieron de una zona arbolada, le cerraron el paso y la sacaron del vehículo a la fuerza, delante de la niña y delante de todos los que iban pasando.

Los testigos contaron lo mismo: ella insistió, insistió, y consiguió que dejaran ir a su hija.

Después caminó por su propio pie hasta el carro de ellos.

Su cuerpo apareció días después en un camino rural del estado. Tenía 36 años y tres hijos.

La atacaron dos veces siendo alcaldesa en funciones, la mataron un año después de entregar el cargo, y hasta hoy no hay una sola persona sentenciada por su asesinato.

Sobrevivió a dos atentados, enterró a su esposo y se quedó. ¿Tú te habrías quedado?
