The other interesting angle about the Mamdani win is that the ethnopolitics of New York City have now shifted. The old political machine—white ethnics in leadership, with dedicated patronage for the black vote—has lost an enormous amount of influence. The Irish and Italians have mostly assimilated into a generalized white identity, the Jewish vote has fractured as the Left has become more solidly anti-Israel, and the black vote is being displaced by new arrivals. The Mamdani coalition rests on this new ethnopolitical coalition of white leftists—i.e., those who have adopted an ideological identity best understood as a rebellion against "whiteness"—and a well-organized "Asian" vote, which tipped the scales in favor of Zohran Mamdani and against the old politics of Andrew Cuomo.
I loudly disagreed with nearly every policy position the Mamdani campaign took, called his supporters out of touch, and boosted candidates who ended up winning less than 1% as attractive alternatives.
Here’s why Zohran’s victory confirms every one of my priors 🧵 1/
