Tax. We’ve all become so used to it, we forget how much we’re actually paying. It is relentless, even beyond death. And for what? If we had a semblance of functioning public services, I could maybe stomach it. But we don’t, so what are we actually paying all of this money for?

We are subject to Scandinavian levels of tax for third-world levels of competence - what a toilet deal.

Earn a salary. Income tax, a fifth gone before we’ve even started. National insurance, more on top of that. What for? A ‘world-class’ health service? The NHS? Ha. Good luck.

Even getting to work costs - taxes on buying a car, running a car, insuring a car. Vast amount of road tax. Is that being well spent? Unless you want potholes you can paddle in, the answer is no. A road network built for half the amount of cars. How’s that going? It takes twice as long to get anywhere. Fuel duty and tax on insurance - whack that on top too. Congestion charges, tolls, fines and more. It goes on and on and on.

Forget getting the train, that’ll cost twice as much and never runs on time - a season ticket into London costs thousands. Unaffordable. Yet the trains so often run empty? Maybe that system isn’t working…

VAT on anything that moves - getting taxed to buy products/services, from already taxed money.

Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax, tax. Then more tax.

Did you go to university? Your ‘loan’ isn’t loan, it’s a tax. Interest is so sharp, you’re just paying that off each month. Hundreds gone, to pay for a sociology degree a decade ago. Ouch. Why are we saddling our youngsters with so much debt, with so much interest on top of that? Madness.

Manage to put a few quid away to save? That gets taxed too - ISAs will be under attack in the budget. Profit made on successful investments, what happens? You guessed it. Tax.

Somehow you’ve scrabbled a deposit together for a property. Well done.

Paying half a million quid for a semi-detached? Not cheap. Stamp duty means you get slapped for thousands. Obviously first time buyer exemptions mean less and less as house prices soar.

You’re in the house. Great news. Or so you thought. Council tax. Going up seemingly by 5% every year. Thousands of pounds a year. For what? To collect the bins? Really? Don’t forget the extra costs to have your garden waste removed. Brilliant.

More insurance taxes, and of course VAT on any improvements you want to make. Bills soaring, with tax slapped onto every corner of it - green levies and the rest.

How depressing. Time for a pint.

Alcohol duty. Because of course. Why wouldn’t they throw extra tax on it? I’m not a smoker, but the same applies. Even holidays. Air passenger duty to put a few extra quid onto the price of a trip away. Just for good measure.

You’re limping on through. Maybe you decide that starting your own business is the way to go?

You get it up and running, starting to make a reasonable profit. Take a small salary - to pay for such luxuries as food and heating. As we know, that gets taxed.

Alongside the costs. National Insurance. Business rates. Fees and licences. It is endless.

What’s left after all that? A profit? Surely good news?

Bang. Corporation tax. A big slice gone. After that, we can enjoy a handsome profit. Right?

Nope. Dividend tax. With its brutal thresholds. What slivers you do take get taxed all over again when you want to actually buy something. Obviously.

And the final kick in teeth.

Inheritance tax.

After everything, somehow, you’ve managed to put a reasonable amount of money away. After all that tax, you’ve succeeded in building a financial legacy to pass to your children - your business, and your own savings.

Money you were taxed on the day you earned it, taxed when you saved it, taxed when you invested it, taxed to build your business. It gets taxed one final time. On both your personal savings, and also the value of your company.

Even after death, it continues.

What are we paying all this money for?

Are our schools world-class? Borders secure? Police visible? NHS efficient? Economy thriving? Roads operational?

No. No. No. No. No. No. NOTHING WORKS.

Britain has the highest tax burden in most of our lifetimes, yet the worst services many of us have ever seen. If everything worked perfectly, there could maybe be an argument for such suffocating levels of tax. But it doesn’t, and hasn’t for decades, so there isn’t.

When the taxpayers fail to fund this state monster of inefficiency and unaccountability, what do they do?

QE. Print money. Creating inflation, devaluing our earnings and our savings. Yet one more tax.

The people creating all of this, implementing all of this? £100k plus on the public sector, living in London. Comfortable salary, great pension, no job risk. Clueless about the real world.

Maybe, just maybe, the current approach isn’t working.

We need to urgently cut tax. Shrink government. Reward hard work.

You just can’t tax a nation into prosperity. It never has worked, and it never will work.

LEAVE OUR MONEY ALONE.

[Rupert Lowe MP @RupertLowe10]

I sit in Parliament listening to these ministers, and it’s all just so depressing - the vast majority of them have never run a business, and it SHOWS. You would not believe how bad it is.

They think ‘work’ means turning up to an office between 9 and 5, answering a few emails, and going home at the end of the day. Nice lunch break, few coffees away from the desk, probably a smoking break or several. It doesn’t - not for the millions of men and women who actually create the wealth that funds the state.

Running a small business isn’t a job. It’s a way of life. It is life. It’s 24/7/365. It’s relentless. You are the accountant, HR department, compliance officer, cleaner, marketer, and customer service team - all in one. There’s no sick pay, no safety net, and no taxpayer-funded pension waiting for you.

Holiday? Good luck. If you do manage to get away, it’s checking the phone all day, every day. Wife/husband obviously getting pissed off. We’ve all been there...

It’s all on you. Every invoice chased, every tax deadline met, every bit of red tape navigated is on you. And if you make one mistake, one error, one small slip-up, the state comes after you - in a relentlessly efficient manner that is never afforded to us when we ask questions of it.

Most MPs have no idea what that feels like. They just don’t. We’re going to see more of this in the budget I’m sure. More hurt. More pain. More tax. They don’t get it.

They don’t understand that when a small business owner gets hit with another tax, it’s not absorbed by a ‘budget’ - it’s taken straight out of their family’s pocket.

There is no ‘deficit’ in the business world - that’s called going bust.

And they certainly don’t understand what real risk looks like. Politicians can vote through a policy on Monday and forget it by Tuesday - a small business owner lives with the consequences of that policy for years, decades. The MP monthly salary is safe. It always has been. In the public sector before, and in the public sector after - if not that, some charity/NGO funded entirely by the public sector.

GET A REAL JOB.

If MPs actually spent a week running a small firm - paying suppliers, tackling VAT, navigating health and safety law, sorting out HR issues, chasing clients for payment, trying to expand while staying compliant with everything from GDPR to local planning regulations - they’d legislate very differently. I can promise you that.

They’d realise that most of Britain’s problems could be solved by the state doing less, not more.

Cutting tax. Simplifying regulation. Slashing back the HRification of the country. Trusting people who actually produce things to get on with it.

Instead, we have a political class that talks endlessly about ‘growth’ while brutally punishing the only people capable of delivering it - especially going after the family businesses/farms, which is a particularly spiteful policy decision.

Small business owners are people who work harder than almost anyone in Parliament could imagine - and who are treated worse for it.

Britain’s small businesses don’t succeed because of politicians, they survive in spite of them.

[Rupert Lowe MP @RupertLowe10]

Take no lectures from these weasel politicians who understand NOTHING about how a small business operates - I sit there listening to Starmer, Reeves and the other gnomes in Parliament. Honestly, it's scary.

It's worse in person. They do not get it. They just don't. You can see it in their eyes. Rabbits in the headlights, but at least the rabbits don't know their own stark limitations.

They've all had cosy jobs, almost always in the public sector or enormous corporates. The ministers, not the rabbits.

No fear, no risk, no jeopardy.

They get their days off, their pensions, their protections. It's all safe and secure, nothing can possibly go wrong.

That is NOT what it's like out in the real world. Businesses go bust, people lose money, they can lose everything in fact.

That's all being made SO much worse by this Government and their offensive attitude to small businesses. It STINKS.

I hate it, honestly. It drives me mad.

It's all just numbers and statistics to the politicians.

More tax, more regulation, more paperwork, more costs - they have absolutely no understanding of the human cost of what they are doing to the economy.

It is brutal.

They're all off now for the summer, back in September. How wonderful.

Small business owners don't have that luxury. Maybe a long weekend away somewhere, but the phone's always on and the stress is still there. The relentless worry.

I want to live in a country that celebrates and releases its small businesses. That gets out of their way, that backs them and embraces them.

That used to be Britain. It's certainly not now.

We need a total rethink of how our small businesses are treated by Government.

Starting with a bit of respect.

[Rupert Lowe MP @RupertLowe10]

Stop me if I’m sounding mad, please…

But why don’t we just stop treating illegal migrants better than actual taxpaying British men and women?

Is that such an extreme position to take?

[Rupert Lowe MP @RupertLowe10]

Starting and running a business in 2025 Britain - let’s walk through it.

You’ve got a good idea, managed to save a few quid to invest and want to give it a go. Let’s say it’s a cafe.

Generate wealth, create jobs and contribute to your local economy. Great idea. You just picked the wrong country to do it in.

Registering the damn thing is complicated enough, and that’s the easy bit. Next up is the bank account? You’re treated like a criminal and it takes week - opening a cafe, not a terrorist cell.

You manage to find a premise, good location. Oh, it costs a fortune. Rent through the roof and you’re forced to pay thousands to the council. For what? The filthy high street? The rapid customer service? Hmm. Yet another rip off. Inspections are a nightmare, it’s never-ending bureaucracy from people who have never created anything in their lives.

But somehow you get it off the ground and things go well. You need to expand, hire someone.

Ouch. PAYE, national insurance, pensions, HR policies, health and safety risk assessments. One wrong step and you’re facing an employment tribunal. Is it even worth the risk?

It’s becoming more and more expensive, and risky, to hire people? Why bother?

Maybe you try and get independent contracted help. Ah. IR35 puts a stop to that. We wouldn’t want any flexibility now, would we? That would make too much sense.

Your accountants already cost an absolute fortune. They’re bleeding you dry just so you comply with the layers and layers of regulations.

But let’s say it’s gone well, and your hard work is paying off. Turnover hits £90k. The dreaded VAT threshold.

That means if you essentially then have to start charging VAT. That means everything gets 20% more expensive for your customers. Or you are forced to absorb the costs. Or you deliberately make less money to stay below the threshold. Just brilliant.

Maybe you want to keep the cafe open later? Serve some alcohol? Have some music on?

More licences. More costs. More inspections. More bureaucracy. Why bother?

Waste collection even costs a fortune. Remind me, why are you already paying the council? You try and ring the council, you’re on hold for 30 minutes. Brilliant. Customers are waiting. You finally speak to someone. They’re rude, and haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. They promise they’ll get back to you, but they only work four days a week and on Thursday they’re working from home. No answer, you have to chase and chase and chase.

Incompetence reigns.

Right. We’ve got through all of that, now you want to pay yourself? Not unreasonable is it? For working 16 hour days to get the business off the ground?

Corporation tax slices your profit down. Maybe there’s some left. Dividend allowance has been cut, so there’s less to take there. Tax rates are up too. Hmm. Okay, well let’s take a small salary and some dividends. Maybe you’ve got student debt too which takes a large chunk?

It is brutal.

Even making money costs money. It costs to deposit, it costs to accept card payments.

No holiday, no protection, no respect. All risk, and you’re treated like dirt by the Government.

You look at it all and just think, why bother? Why not work for the public sector as some irrelevant bureaucrat obstructing everyone else? Get 60k, 35 days holiday and you can literally never be sacked. What’s the point? Why take the risk? Just do that instead.

We desperately need to back British enterprise. Reward those who take all of the risk. And actually, support local businesses where we all can.

We should be slashing corporation tax, doubling the VAT threshold, increasing personal allowances, abolishing business rates for high street small firms, reducing national insurance contributions, cutting tax on salary/dividends, brutalising red tape and PLENTY more.

If you do these things, you will generate MORE tax revenue. It is really not a complicated principle. Does Reeves understand that? No. The woman is clueless. Absolutely clueless. She does NOT understand what she is forcing on business owners. Let’s see if she can run our cafe for a week. Absolutely NO chance.

I’m with the men and women who build businesses, create wealth, and generate opportunities.

They have my full respect. The politicians running our country certainly do not.

My message to our cafe owner? Keep plugging away, it will get better.

Please know that at least one MP is fighting for you in Westminster.

We paid Pakistan £133 million in foreign aid this year for some mad reason.

They’re not accepting their deported rapists?

Cancel aid. Tax remittances. Suspend visas. Enforce tariffs.

Follow Trump’s lead. Set a swift and brutal example. Watch how quickly the Pakistanis fold…

[Rupert Lowe MP @RupertLowe10]

The House of Commons needs to stop dedicating so much time to foreign affairs.

Britain, OUR country, is a mess.

That should be our sole focus - not Palestine, not Pakistan. But Britain, and the British people. THE priority.

I am proud to represent Great Yarmouth, not Gaza.

[Rupert Lowe MP @RupertLowe10]

Farage is wrong - British taxpayers do not want to further subsidise healthy individuals who may never work a day in their lives. Cynical vote-chasing welfare expansion.

The uncomfortable truth? We need brutal cuts to benefits.

Alongside a safety net for those who genuinely need it, but rip away the option of a lifetime on benefits for healthy individuals.

What can be done?

- Benefits tied to British citizenship or a significant period of financial contribution.

- Compulsory job placements/community work after a set period of time.

- Potential voucher use for those healthy claimants unwilling to work.

- Mandatory face-to-face assessments, particularly for those claiming mental health issues.

- Young claimants automatically enrolled into placements, training or apprenticeships.

- Firms can claim tax credits for taking on long-term unemployed people and training them.

- No benefits unless proper evidence of job search.

It's reported that more than half a million are claiming disability benefits for anxiety and depression.

This is madness. It simply has to end. It cannot continue, we just can't afford it.

Political courage is required to even begin this process, but we are spending FAR too much money on supporting people NOT to work - it's THE big unspoken truth in British politics.

Support those genuinely in need, but don't reward indolence and idleness. We need to back hard work - transform the takers to givers, and get Britain working.

Farage is wrong. A serious party would fix the system, not feed it.

[Rupert Lowe MP @RupertLowe10]

Reform is wrong to call for the end of the two child benefit cap - a lazy policy, which fattens an already vastly bloated welfare state. Start with tax breaks for parents. Make childcare affordable. Let people keep more of what they earn. Reward work over dependency.

Hardworking parents, already taxed up to their neck, should not have to further subsidise parents who don’t work.

We need a serious policy platform to encourage British families to have more children.

Front-load child benefit - pay more of the money in the earlier years, when the help is really required. Link the payment to British citizenship or at least following a considerable period of paying into the system.

Stamp duty reduction for British families - make it easier for young families to move into a larger home to meet their needs.

Reform spousal visas - British citizens should be able to raise their families at home with a foreign spouse, without being treated like criminals by the Home Office (subject to the immigration red list). That’s positive, principled immigration and it should be encouraged.

Tax breaks for parents and marriage - Reward families with meaningful relief. Raise thresholds, widen VAT exemptions for essential child-related items, and expand tax-deductible childcare costs.

IVF access - widen for British citizens.

Hungary-style tax incentives - Exemptions or lifelong income tax reductions for mothers? If it works in Hungary, let’s look at how it could apply to Britain.

Recklessly expanding benefits is not the answer. That argument may not be politically convenient, but it is the right one to make. Reform want to chase votes, and maybe that strategy will work for them in the immediate short term, but it won’t work for Britain.

Speaking honestly, and it’s not an argument you’ll hear politicians making, we need to radically slash the amount of our money being spent on benefits, not irresponsibly hike it.

Unpopular? Maybe. Necessary? Absolutely, yes.

Keir Starmer is a dour, duplicitous, thin-skinned, po-faced, sanctimonious hypocrite who has no vision and talks in automatonic soundbites, He believes in nothing, so flip-flops his opinions to cadge votes. And that’s why most people can’t stand him.

I asked the Foreign Office if they would consider cancelling all foreign aid to Pakistan, and use that money to fund a full Government inquiry into the rape gangs.

Unsurprisingly, their answer was no.

£133 million for Pakistan in foreign aid this year. I say scrap the lot.
