Why is communication cool? It is the way we can take a thought and express it to someone else and have that person understand. It is who we are and what we do. It is how we learn about history and science and religion. Communication is all-consuming. https://t.co/Zz5XmUHxDV
Undoing the Grade: Why We Grade, and How to Stop
My new book about grades and #ungrading will be published next Tuesday.
"Grades and assessment are elephants in almost every room where discussions of education are underway."
Flex your lowest academic low score.
To remind us that almost everyone fails at some point in life but it isn't the end of the road. Just a memory in the end.
Mine was 27/100 in Engineering Math 2, just a year after I'd scored 99 in 12th boards. Much needed kick in my butt.
The conversation around ChatGPT isn't a particularly new conversation. People have been talking about how technology will transform or dismantle education for decades, even centuries. (a thread)
This thread feels evergreen.
Short version: Higher education pedagogy is a field with practices, literature, philosophies, history. Higher Education Pedagogy should be a department with full-time faculty at every institution of higher education.
I see lots of jobs at centers for teaching and learning. They’re essential for the health of our universities and colleges. I have yet to see a posting for a professor of #highered pedagogy who’d teach full classes for new/future faculty. It’s a shame and a missed opportunity.
THANK YOU @ZerlinaMaxwell for having me as your guest last night! The action by the majority party in the #PAHouse + the #SCOTUS overturning #RoeVWade is the start of them chipping away at our rights. If we don’t get loud NOW, who knows what will be next!

In Ohio, a bill was proposed that would require genital exams for all student athletes. That provision is being removed from the bill. Still, it was proposed and discussed, as though it is up for reasonable debate. State sanctioned sexual abuse. This is just one example.

"Ditching grades entirely will require some rethinking of ingrained systems and beliefs about how we measure and track student performance. But it is worthwhile when we consider the benefits to student learning." https://t.co/d4U804f170
From my interview with @becksup for this new @chronicle piece: “I’d say there’s nothing objective about attendance policies at this particular moment. They can’t measure engagement or participation or motivation.” https://t.co/ilxN5aQVOq
I missed my connecting flight so I have to stay overnight at O'Hare and let me tell you guys being practically alone in an airport is fucking AMMAAAZZZIIIIINNNNGGG.
If education is content delivery, books surely do that just fine. And they’re pedagogical. They provoke discussion. But education is community, listening, collaboration, care. It’s visceral and sometimes ephemeral. The best teachers challenge us and are responsive in the moment.
