Honored that our @propublica@TexasTribune@frontlinepbs Uvalde documentary was recognized with an @RTDNA award in the national news documentary category.
Unfortunately, questions about the failed response continue.

In three hours from now, 2 years ago, I told Uzi to go to bed. He was sitting at the kitchen table, watching YouTube on his phone. I gave him a hug, and ruffled his hair. As he started to run towards the stairs leading up to his bedroom I told him I loved him. “I love you too, dad.” Was the last thing he said to me.
He went to bed. I went to bed. The thought never crossed my mind that that would be the last time I would see him alive. A little over 12 hours before he was murdered.
In my mind I go back to May 23rd over and over. I wish I would have told my kids they could skip the rest of the week from school. I wish I would have taken off work to see that last assembly. I wish that it was being your kids to work day.
Anything.
Anything so Uzi would still be here. Anything so he could be going into 7th grade this year.
Anything so he would turn 13 in August and I could by him his first razor as is tradition in my family.
Anything at all so I could hear his voice and his laughter, feel his hug and his love.
I’m damaged beyond repair, as is my wife and my other children. Uzi was truly one of a kind, the light when it was dark, the joy when all else failed.
I wish I could relive 10 oclock , May 23rd 2022 over and over like Groundhog Day.
That would be bliss.

I’m so incredibly proud of this — our prolonged investigations of the failed law enforcement response to the Uvalde school shooting was a challenging and worthy story.

Congratulations to @stillsarita! Stillman just won a #Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism for her amazing work reporting on felony murder. A legal doctrine that "has put thousands of Americans—disproportionately young and Black—in prison." https://t.co/9jS5DuMODk
Our entry included this investigation with @LChurchilll@jinitzail that reconstructed what happened on both sides of the door that day, including finding that states require more active shooter training for children and teachers than they do of police.

The city of Uvalde has announced that assistant chief Homer Delgado will be Uvalde Police Department’s new chief. Outgoing chief Daniel Rodriguez’s last day is scheduled April 6.
Honored by this award & grateful for editor @zahiratorres & team @LChurchilll@jinitzail@jceballosv. But we are always heartbroken & infuriated for the people of Uvalde - not only that this happened, but that two years later, they still fight for transparency & accountability.
Austin-based investigator Jesse Prado will be at the Willie De Leon Civic Center on Thursday, March 7, at 2 p.m. to present his investigative report on the Uvalde Police Department's actions during the Robb Elementary School mass shooting on May 24, 2022.
