Why do many Kurds in Iraq see U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack’s return as President Trump’s special envoy to Iraq and Syria as a nightmare?
@KamalChomani examines the anxiety Tom Barrack’s return has created among Iraqi Kurdish leaders and the wider Kurdish public.
Dear @POTUS
Subject: Special Envoy to Mideast Minorities
I suggest appointing a Special Envoy for Middle Eastern Minorities — including Kurds, Christians, Druze, Alawites, Yazidis, Copts, Darfuris, Bejas, Nubians, Amazighs, and others — to strengthen engagement with the United States, civil society organizations, Israel, Arab moderates, Muslim reformers, and secular voices across the region.
This would be an extraordinarily difficult mission, opposed by extremists, radicals, jihadists, and, inevitably, entrenched bureaucracies. Yet such an appointment would be warmly welcomed by these talented and resilient communities — not only across the Middle East and Africa, but also within the United States, especially in 2026...
The envoy must be strategically prepared, experienced, trusted, aware of US national interests and knows these communities.

Trump threatens the Kurds and describes them as mercenaries, forgetting that it was the Kurds who granted him the certificate of breaking the largest terrorist organization and killing its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
He also forgot that he himself turned against the Kurds through the deals of 2019, and gave the green light to Turkey to invade Sere Kaniye, and to use internationally prohibited weapons such as white phosphorus.
At a time when the Kurds were sacrificing themselves to free the world from the filth of ISIS, Turkey was supporting the organization with money and weapons, and opened its territories for terrorists to cross into Syria.
And how can we forget that you, and the countries that claimed to fight terrorism, brought the leader of the largest terrorist organization, namely al-Qaeda, into Syria, and then gave the green light to target the main force that fought terrorism, namely the Kurds in Syria.
And he says that the Kurds want America to pay them, forgetting that the money that was being paid was allocated for ISIS prisoners and their families in the camps, whose number exceeded 60,000.
Why, Trump, did Turkey, your ally whom you adore, not help you in your war against Iran, but instead stood against you and also threatened that if the Kurds rose up against the Iranian regime, we would intervene to help the Iranian regime!!
Yes, Congress and the Americans love us because they know who we are. We love peace and life, and the Kurds did not betray a single American soldier throughout 15 years of alliance, but rather we were always a support to them just as they were to us.
And not as happened with those whom you brought with the support of Western countries and granted authority in Damascus; in the first joint patrol between them and the American forces in the Syrian city of Palmyra, three American soldiers and their translator were killed, and the killer was one of the Public Security members, according to the statement of the spokesperson for the Syrian Ministry of Interior.
You granted the Turks and other countries the opportunity to end the existence of the Kurds in Rojava (North and East Syria), after all the sacrifices and thousands of martyrs and wounded in confronting terrorism, and then you want us to trust you and fight Iran alongside you, and afterwards you turn against us again and give Turkey and others the justification to exterminate us.

Trump needs a sleeping pill, and Rubio needs to make it right again. Its not even been 6 months before you turned a terrorist with a bounty of $10m on his head to a president.
Despite publicly blaming the Kurds, President Trump vetoed the idea of facilitating a Kurdish-led uprising against Iran, sources confirm. https://t.co/h6b7IHYV3I
🚨 IF TRUMP WAS MISLED, HE SHOULD LOOK AT TOM BARRACK
The Kurdish people are not one man, one faction, or one network.
They are a nation of more than 50 million people, many of whom fought and died alongside the United States against ISIS and Iran-backed forces.
If weapons were withheld or promises were broken, then the problem is not “the Kurds.”
The problem is that Washington trusted the wrong intermediaries and the wrong people on the ground.
Tom Barrack and those around him should answer for who they chose to rely on.

Let’s do a honest break down what President Trump said on the Kurds:
▪️He said he’s “disappointed” in the Kurds.
If we’re being honest, Kurds were recently disappointed as of January of 2026 in the administration’s decision to legitimize Jolani in Syria. Jolani was a wanted jihadist with a $10,000,000 bounty by the U.S. on his head. But thanks to the actions of our ambassador to Turkey, Barrack, who advanced Turkey’s interest in Syria by not providing accurate information to the President, he was made President of Syria. We ultimately chose Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia over the Kurds who fought alongside our service members.
Kurds were not going to allow themselves to be betrayed again, especially two months after they were undermined and betrayed in Syria.
▪️He said Kurds “take take take.”
Kurds never take. When kurds receive anything from the U.S., it’s because U.S. needs them as a key ally in the region, for a battle, against an enemy, for an upcoming war, whatever it may be. Kurds also receive basic weapons as it is the U.S. long standing policy to not undermine the central government’s they reside in.
▪️“They have a great reputation in congress.”
They do, very true. Why? Because Congressional members visit and speak with the Kurds directly. They speak with the people and communities the Kurds have saved and sacrificed for, like ethnic and religious minorities. They saw first hand how it was the Kurds not Syria, Turkey, Iraq or Iran that protected U.S. service members during the Iraq war.
I don’t expect Congress to have a great view of Iraq, Iran, Syria or Turkey because they are not on our side. That’s the simple truth.
▪️“They fight hard when they get paid.”
Of course. Kurds don’t have a state, they need weapons if they need to fight ISIS, al Qaeda and all the other radical Islamists in the region. Paying them to cover the basics is part of the deal we have with them. Kurds in Syria and Iraq are often the first line of defense—they lost 15,000+ lives in the fight against ISIS.
Turkey helped ISIS directly yet were trying to give them F-35 jets. Why aren’t we holding Turkey to the same degree of accountability as we are to the stateless Kurds?
We lost thousands of Americans during the Iraq War, spent trillions to help Iraqis, invested with advanced weapons and institution building and so much more yet they still take orders from Tehran—where’s the accountability? Why are we picking on the Kurds who had our back in Iraq? Where zero American lives were lost during the war in the autonomous Kurdistan Region.
I believe President Trump is once again receiving false information on the Kurds just like he did during Trump 1.0 when Erdogan visited the White House and quickly after that the U.S. tried to withdraw from Syria in 2019, just like in January 2026 in Syria and again here with Iran.
Don’t forget, the Kurds are non-state actors. Treating them as if they have total sovereignty is unfair. These accusations against the Kurds, a key ally of the United States, puts the Kurds in a very dangerous position.
@realDonaldTrump@POTUS I’m happy to provide you and your time with honest information on the Kurds, because whoever is talking to you about the Kurds clearly hates the Kurds and wants to see the U.S.-Kurdish alliance totally destroyed.
The Kurds didn’t “steal” anything, @seanhannity. Kurds are not thieves.
Whoever is feeding you this nonsense is lying to you. (Is it the delusional Reza worshippers?)
As Senator @LindseyGrahamSC said, prove it.
Kurds are one of the very few reliable allies the United States has in the Middle East.
This desperate attempt to blame the Kurds for the failure of the very weak Iranian diaspora who worship the Loser Prince, Reza, to rise against the regime is despicable. Similarly, the Kurds are not responsible for the lack of action inside Iran.
Turning against the only armed, organized and battle hardened ethnic minority in Iran is a failing strategy.
