@PaulMacca63@ClarkeMicah Pope Urban VI tortured and executed cardinals he suspected of conspiracy. I don't think Jesus meant him to have the keys, do you?
@padraic661@ClarkeMicah@Dogbox19 Not so unique because Jesus's brother James was head of the church in Jerusalem even though Jesus gave the keys to Peter.
@GuffyNicola Yes.
The elephant in the room is that Catholics are worshipping graven images of Jesus' mother. Where did that come from? It can't possibly be the one true church.
@William_Laing@ClarkeMicah@kemp1936 There is. When Jesus said " I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven", he was expecting the Kingdom of Heaven to come within a generation. There was no implication of thousands of years of succession.
@ewan31500487@ClarkeMicah@Dogbox19 What I have been learning is that in churches there is much contorted retrospective motivated reasoning, just as there is on twitter. What happened to the Gnostics?
@a37yM@Mustaffa_drink@DominicSelwood@ClarkeMicah Why did it lose a claim? Where does it say in the Bible that there are conditions attached to succession? How did the teachings of Paul get into the Bible? he was not part of the succession.
@Dogbox19@ClarkeMicah Note that Christianity is based significantly on the teaching of St Paul, who was not part of the Roman succession and never met Jesus before Jesus died.
Succession is by the Holy Ghost, not by a set of metaphorical keys.
@ClarkeMicah@BernardBeatty4 But marriage is based on the creation story in Genesis which Jesus referred to. Does anyone believe the creation story in Genesis? (either version)?
@ClarkeMicah@Dogbox19 ...Peter was the Bishop of Rome, so Romans decided that the succession would go to the next bishop, whom they chose. But all this is contested by Eastern Orthodox, who trace succession through onstantinople, Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem.
@ClarkeMicah@Dogbox19 The legend is that Jesus gave keys to Peter, before the church of Rome existed, then Peter went to Rome. But Peter died, so who did he pass the keys onto? The keys are not a physical object anyway, so there could be several lines of authority....
