“Leveraging Impact Finance and Empowering Communities to Improve Food Security and Promote Sustainable Blue Economies.”

🎤SPF President Atsushi Sunami delivered the opening remarks and SPF Senior Research Fellow Masanori Kobayashi introduced the event’s theme.

Ways to build sustainable blue economies in Africa

Exploring financing methods & public–private partnerships

🤝 Through this initiative, SPF aims to deepen Japan–Africa cooperation and foster collaboration well beyond TICAD 9.

His Excellency, the President Dr. @WilliamsRuto today at State House, Nairobi, met a delegation led by CS @rebecca_miano and a team from Conservation International (CI), led by its global CEO; Dr. Sanjayan to reaffirm the longstanding partnership with the Government of Kenya and to explore deeper collaboration on wildlife conservation, climate action and conservation-related livelihoods.

The Ministry and the CI’s leadership team briefed the Head of State on current and prospective activities in Kenya and sought strategic alignment with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), Vision 2030, and other climate commitments. Conservation International's interest in partnering with Kenya stems from Kenya’s leadership in conservation efforts and initiatives both regionally and internationally. In recognition of Kenya’s leadership on the global climate stage, CI reaffirmed its commitment to scale up technical and financial support to further advance national and regional climate goals.

Mr. Ki-Moon has been in the country for the ground-breaking of the Global Centre on Adaptation which marks a pivotal moment in embedding climate resilience into the fabric of global cooperation.

CS Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH earlier today hosted a delegation from Conservation International (CI) to reaffirm the strong working relationship between the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife and the US-based global conservation organization whose program portfolio in Kenya is expanding, and Nairobi being positioned as a global centre for science, nature finance and conservation.

Yesterday, in Washington D.C., I had the honour of opening “Shifting Priorities, Shared Futures: Rethinking Conservation and Development in Africa,” an @AWF_Official-led dialogue that brought together leading voices in conservation, finance, and policy. The message was clear: Africa must lead in redefining conservation, not as charity, but as strategy.

In my remarks, I reflected on the legacy of foreign aid and how decades of external dependency have undermined governance across sectors. As aid recedes, we’re seeing systems collapse. Now is the moment for African governments to reclaim ownership—not by substituting one donor for another, but by embedding conservation within our national development priorities.

Our distinguished panel underscored this urgency. Kevin Green of Rare reminded us that without community-led behaviour change, policies and funding will fall short. @JJMandima Mandima of Conservation International, Africa Field Division, called for homegrown financing through better use of extractives and biodiversity strategies. Susan Lylis of The @TheICCFGroup spotlighted youth lawmakers reshaping policy from within. And @cmrodrigueze of the @theGEF challenged Africa to make conservation make economic sense—on our own terms. And Mozambique’s H.E. Gustavo Sobrinho Dge Dgedge affirmed that true sustainability must be equitable.

The dialogue reinforced what AWF has long championed: conservation must serve people and economies, not stand apart from them. As we move forward, our focus is on strengthening African institutions, financing mechanisms, and policies that make nature a driver of development, not a dependency.

This is how we shape a resilient future—one that reflects Africa’s priorities and leadership.
