Most people are asleep.
They never questioned what they were told, and what they are told shapes their psyche that interprets and acts on the billions of bits of information they process throughout their lives.
They live, marry, work, and die in their sleep without waking up.
Another one of my favorite Willie stories:
One of the things that I like best about Willie is that he's always followed his own moral compass. That's why, in 1966, when his Willie Nelson Show package tour rolled across South Texas and Louisiana, he added African American country artist Charley Pride to the bill. Willie didn't care what people thought. He knew talent when he heard it. At Dewey Groom’s segregated Longhorn Ballroom, in Dallas, “Dewey didn’t want Charley on the bandstand,” Willie later recalled. “So I got up onstage and introduced Charley . . . I laid a big kiss on him, right on the mouth. Then he started singing, and they loved it.” The color barrier had been broken. Later that night, after a raucous guitar picking session in his motel room, Willie said “I wished I would’ve had a camera. Charley Pride and Dewey Groom had both passed out on the same bed.”
This is a photo of Willie and Charley Pride at Soap Creek Saloon in Austin back in 1975. It was taken by the great Scott Newton, who was nice enough to let me post it here. Scott's taken an INCREDIBLE assortment of photos of music stars etc.. who have passed through Austin. You can see them, and purchase them, at his website: https://t.co/OxM80qqeP3
Scott's not only a great photographer but a very interesting character with whom to have a conversation!
@NoJesuitTricks That’s so true and well stated. If you’re ever in the vicinity of Leslie (in Searcy County) I’d be happy to show you the local attractions.
@NoJesuitTricks This is truly beautiful and strikingly poignant. Raised in the hills of northern Arkansas, I have always loved to hear the tales of our neighbors in the delta. It wasn’t long ago that I realized how rich and unique that culture is and how it contrasts with life in the hills.
The Queen of England died 5 months ago….
She ruled an entire nation and accumulated more wealth than 99.99% of humans…
And…yet…you haven’t thought about her except for this tweet.
You’re gonna die.
Everyone will move on.
Do what you want.
@tcboyle I love “White Noise.” I just recommended it to a friend who has a similar taste in literature. I first read it in college, and it renewed my faith in first person narration. It’s so cool to have post-apocalyptic commentary with the 1980s serving as a backdrop.
My husband Pat has worked at Deere for 20+years. He’s 2nd generation Deere. Fiercely committed. Smart. But also close to burn out.
