@david_linklater @ESPNRefNHL Your interpretation simply means that the offside rule applies, not the delayed offside rule, such that offside should have been called because Nichushkin crossed the blue line before the puck. The result is the same and the goal is offside.

@ESPNRefNHL At the time the offside player was in the offensive zone, Makar may not have been touching the puck, therefore the puck was “loose”, but he was attempting to gain possession of it which-according to the plain reading of the rule-is offside.

@FriedgeHNIC Interesting explanation but the rules don’t contemplate “dumping” the puck, “losing possession” or “losing control” of the puck as exceptions to the offside rule. Although possession of the puck is defined elsewhere as the last player to touch the puck who is not a goalie. Hmmm.

@DarrenDreger HOW? The rules say the delayed offside requires all players of the offending team to clear the zone at the same instant. It is clear that did not occur and instead Makar either touched the puck or at least attempted to (and did) regain possession of an allegedly lose puck.
