This is Mr. Pickles, a critically endangered species of tortoise at the Houston Zoo, who finally became a father at the age of 90 earlier this year.
He and his partner, Mrs. Pickles, welcomed three tortoise hatchlings: Dill, Gherkin and Jalapeño.
Radiated tortoises are a critically endangered species, and Mr. Pickles is considered the most genetically valuable radiated tortoise in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan.
They are native to Madagascar and are known for their beautiful shells, which are adorned with a unique starburst pattern. Unfortunately, their numbers in the wild have been declining due to habitat loss and poaching. The species is also threatened by the illegal pet trade, as radiated tortoises are often captured and sold as exotic pets.
The Houston Zoo is dedicated to providing the best care for Mr. Pickles and his family. The three hatchlings will remain behind the scenes until they are big enough to join their parents in the Reptile & Amphibian House. In the meantime, Mr. Pickles and Mrs. Pickles will continue to serve as ambassadors for their species, raising awareness about the plight of the radiated tortoise and the importance of conservation efforts.
