United Airlines Flight 93Todd Beamer left home that Tuesday for a one-day business trip to San Francisco. He was due back the same night. His wife, Lisa, was five months pregnant. Their sons, David and Drew, were three and one. The family had just returned from a company trip to Italy. He chose to come home first so he could see the boys.
He grew up in the Chicago suburbs, the middle child of David and Peggy Beamer. He played baseball, attended Wheaton Christian schools, graduated from Wheaton College in 1991, and earned an MBA from DePaul. At Wheaton he met Lisa. They married in 1994, taught Sunday school for years, and built an ordinary life of work, church, and small children. “Let’s roll” was already a family phrase, what he said when it was time to get in the car.
Flight 93 left Newark late. After takeoff, hijackers seized the cockpit. Passengers learned from phone calls that other planes had already been flown into buildings. Todd tried to reach Lisa. When the call failed, he reached GTE Airfone supervisor Lisa Jefferson. He stayed calm. He described what was happening. He asked her to pray the Lord’s Prayer with him. Others on the plane joined. He recited the 23rd Psalm. He asked her, if he did not make it, to tell his family how much he loved them.Then Jefferson heard him say to the people around him: “Are you guys ready? Okay. Let’s roll.”Todd Beamer and other passengers and crew moved toward the cockpit. The plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m. Everyone aboard was killed. The intended target—almost certainly the Capitol or the White House was not reached.
His daughter, Morgan Kay, was born on January 9, 2002. Todd Beamer was not a soldier. He was a salesman, a Sunday school teacher, a husband, and a father who decided, in the last minutes of his life, that the plane would not be used as a weapon. His words became a national rallying cry because they were so ordinary and so complete: get ready, then go.
He is remembered at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania and on Panel S-68 of the National September 11 Memorial. His damaged watch and an Oracle business card recovered from the site are among the artifacts that remain.
