How will AI agents impact Retail media and profitability of ecommerce players?

For the last 5 yrs, retail media / product ecommerce ads have grown 30% y/y and gone from <1% of GMV for ecommerce players to 2-7%

This in turn has lead to higher profitability and Ads now account for 25-100% of all profitability for these players.

However - as the world moves towards Agents and Apple / Siri / Gemini / ChatGpt will soon allow you to order items / food / cabs - the discovery aspect on ecommerce platforms reduces and these ad dollars will have to find an alternate format. I am sure these players will find other ways to juice margin - but this tailwind of the last 5 years - will soon be called into question!
