New paper in @STOTEN_journal!
We investigate the stopover ecology of #WhiteStorks & suggest that #landfills reshaped #migration for this species, particularly by increasing migratory distances and timings.

(6/6)🧵According to the #EuropeanUnion#wastepolicy plan, landfill waste will need to be reduced to 10% of current levels by 2035.
Also, it is expected that waste production will become more abundant in northern Africa.
What will happen to storks' migratory paths by then?
Many thanks to the @Belvide_Ringers, who let me ring with them! I would like especially to thank Colin for what I learned on Jack snipes :) Check his segment on Jack snipes on Winterwatch: https://t.co/5Xrh9nr6OW
1/ New Paper🚨
We tracked the autumn migration of #WhiteStorks and found that the timing of migration shapes stork migratory performance, the weather conditions they face and their destination

🪶Northern populations of Rollers have a slower pace-of-life than southern populations!🪶

Since 2018 we've also been tracking #BlackStorks juveniles to unravel their migratory decisions. This year we deployed 8 more GPS and, unlike white storks, black storks are only now starting to explore the areas around their nests, before migrating south much later in the season!
#WhiteStork migration just started and 3 out of 19 GPS-tracked juveniles won't reach their wintering areas. They've died in #powerlines close to landfill sites, highlithing these sites as collision hotspots, as we've found in our new paper:

📢 Help! 📢
Unfortunately one of our #WhiteStork juveniles died in Cadiz, close to Medina-Sidonia, likely from powerline collision. Do we have any White Stork friends in Spain that could help us recovering the GPS tag? If so, send us a message! @AmigosCegonas@Otis_inglorius
Our new paper is now out!
We investigate the factors that lead #WhiteStorks to fly at collision risk altitudes and suggest #landfill sites can act as #powerline collision hotspots.

This week @MartaAcacio from our team talked with
@Visao_pt
about #WhiteStorks, how they are adapting to anthropogenic land use and climate change, and many other things! It’s in video and podcast format! (in portuguese) https://t.co/pEsi5Eixry
