While they approach the issue from different angles, both narratives point to a similar theme of alleged high level protection and financial involvement.

Here is how the two testimonies connect and complement each other:

The Money Trail and The Intelligence Report

Trillanes focused heavily on the financial aspect during his hearings. He presented documents and findings from the Anti Money Laundering Council to support his claim that Samuel Sammie Uy, a major campaign contributor described by Trillanes as an alleged drug lord, funneled millions of pesos directly into the bank accounts of the Duterte family. In contrast, Acierto focused on law enforcement intelligence. In his 2024 testimony before the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs and the Quad Committee, Acierto stated that he submitted a comprehensive report in 2018 detailing the involvement of former presidential economic adviser Michael Yang and Allan Lim in clandestine drug operations.

Allegations of Protection and Negligence

Both testimonies accuse former President Rodrigo Duterte and his closest allies of shielding these controversial figures. Acierto directly accused Duterte and Senator Bong Go of intentionally ignoring his intelligence report on Michael Yang. He further claimed that instead of acting on the evidence, the administration placed a bounty on his head, forcing him into hiding. Trillanes echoed this narrative of protection, arguing that the Duterte family used their political power to mislead the public about their anti illegal drug crusade while allegedly benefiting financially from figures like Sammie Uy.

The Network of Powerful Businessmen

The connection between the two hearings highlights the prominent roles of wealthy businessmen in the inner circle of the previous administration. Michael Yang served as an economic adviser with direct access to the highest levels of government, while Sammie Uy was known as a massive campaign backer with deep ties to the family. Both men are now being independently accused in separate congressional and clarificatory hearings of having links to the illegal drug trade, suggesting a recurring pattern of questionable alliances.

The Bigger Picture

When placed side by side, the statements from Trillanes and Acierto create a multi layered accusation against the Duterte administration. Acierto provides the operational perspective, claiming that the police and the executive branch actively suppressed investigations into Michael Yang. Trillanes provides the financial perspective, offering bank records to allege that the administration received direct payouts from Sammie Uy. Together, these testimonies present the claim that the aggressive war on drugs was used to eliminate lower level targets while alleged favored syndicates enjoyed protection and close ties with the government.
