Sir Hans Adolf Krebs (1900β1981) was a German-British biochemist and physician who unlocked how our cells turn food into energy.
Born in Hildesheim, Germany, to a surgeon father, he studied medicine and worked under Nobel laureate Otto Warburg.
As a Jewish scientist, he fled Nazi Germany in 1933, settling in England.
1937, he discovered the citric acid cycle (now called the Krebs cycle) β the central hub of cellular respiration. It explains how carbs, fats, and proteins are broken down in mitochondria to produce ATP, the energy currency of life. He also helped map the urea cycle (how we detox ammonia).
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (shared with Fritz Lipmann). Knighted in 1958. A refugee who changed science.
