A student recently asked me for academic job market advice and I pulled up a slideshow from a few years ago. I don't think I've shared it, but it might be broadly useful. I think the advice almost entirely holds up.

Being an academic can be great, but also tough.
You experience tons of rejection.
Everyone is constantly telling you what you're doing wrong.
Teaching is tiring.
Days drag by with seemingly little progress.
Working in isolation can be lonely.
So, I think its useful for #AcademicTwitter to remember...
@DudespostingWs This is my little boulder, but the builders uncovered one on my neighbors lot the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. They sell for big bucks as yard decor. I paid a guy $20 & a 6 pk of Shinerbock to move it to my front yard!
Pop quiz: what couldn't YOU do without high-speed internet access? Last summer, @resec_umass Christian Rojas told #UMass about the digital divide - and it turns out that there's plenty we'd miss if it weren't for wifi.

This year's Econ job market has, by all accounts, been brutal. If you're still not sure what you're doing next year, applying for external funding to continue your work is a great way to buy yourself time & options. It's a way to "build your own post-doc." Check out AV's open RFPs!
#EconTwitter PhD students working in Applied Micro:
Make sure to submit your paper for the 4th Workshop we are co-organizing!! Profs Sandra Black and Rema Hanna are our keynote speakers.
Every time I see these data I take it as a reminder that we really need to look after our students. And I hope you don't mind if I share that reminder with you, too. #TeachEcon
