On the night of August 1, 1793, Marie Antoinette was transferred from the Temple prison to the Conciergerie, where she was held alone in a small cell for the final 76 days of her life.

Her trial opened on October 14 before the Revolutionary Tribunal, and after nearly 20 uninterrupted hours of proceedings, she was sentenced to death. She was executed at Place de la Révolution, now Place de la Concorde, on October 16, 1793, at the age of 37.

When the monarchy briefly returned to power during the Restoration, Louis XVIII, younger brother of the executed Louis XVI, ordered her original cell demolished and replaced with an expiatory chapel in 1816, built partly on the site of her cell and partly on the cell that had once held Robespierre. The chapel's walls were painted black with silver tears, and an altar was placed roughly where her bed once stood, engraved with a line from the last letter she wrote before her execution.

The room now shown to visitors as her cell, pictured below, isn't the original either. It's a modern reconstruction built nearby to give visitors a sense of what her imprisonment looked like, since the real cell no longer exists in any form, only in the chapel built to replace it.

@imetatronink People are saying the story that the US is running low on weapons is fake. Maybe so, but it’s also true the US and allies have become reliant on high-tech equipment. How long can the US sustain its attacks on Iran? Does the US really want to let everyone know?

@imetatronink The US was seduced by the lethality of expensive, high-tech weapons systems. Despite its staggeringly big military budget, it’s now discovering how quickly those get burned in war. An outrageous squandering of taxpayer money, leaving the country weakened to attack by a peer.
