Almost £24.4bn of public spending on contractors went to firms controlled by private equity last year, the Guardian has found.

Private equity buyouts – which often involve taking on large amounts of debt – have led to the closure of hundreds of adult care homes in the UK, while the ongoing Thames Water crisis has been worsened by a series of private equity owners that loaded the utility with debt.

Former Green party leader Natalie Bennett told the Guardian that private equity has become a “financial pandemic”.

“Fundamentally, if you are running something for profit, you’re often not running it for the benefit of the people who need the service,” she said. “Austerity and cutbacks in funding for local councils has absolutely led us here.”
