There’s a similar history to Essaouira, Morocco. In the 1700’s, the Sultan wanted to build a strong international trading channel out of the port at Essaouira. He brought in Jewish families from across Morocco for all the reasons you described in your article—network, language, experts in international trade. The Jews of Essaouira lived in the walled quarters of the Mellah —which means “salt”, a nod to the trading business. Essaouira became a successful trading port and helped the Sultan and the overall economy of Morocco. For many years, it was home to the largest Jewish population in Morocco.
