I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone watching health influencers warn about chemicals in conventional sunscreens (rightly so), but never mention the real elephant in the room.. how sunscreen alters the sun’s full spectrum, just like low-emission glass

This is not a dig at those of you who speak on sunscreen. It’s constructive criticism coupled with a perspective based in circadian biology

I haven’t heard anybody discuss this aspect of sunscreens besides myself

The sun delivers a full spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, from infrared (IR) to ultraviolet (UV) in very specific ratios. Our biology evolved under these exact conditions, with each wavelength playing a unique role

Infrared (IR-A) supports mitochondrial function via cytochrome c oxidase, enhances blood flow (vasodilation), and primes the skin for UV exposure by building antioxidant defenses (elevating melanin, glutathione, so forth)

Visible light (especially blue and red), entrains the circadian system via melanopsin in the retina and skin. This signals time of day to every cell, tissue, organ, via the zeitgeber of light

UV-A releases nitric oxide from skin stores, improves blood flow, lowering blood pressure. It stimulates the POMC system, including opioid peptide hormones like beta-endorphins, and helps regulate the immune system

UV-B is the only wavelength range which triggers vitamin D synthesis, it has been shown to repigment the skin of vitiligo patients, and creates melanin which is nature’s most incredible pro-life biopolymer

Sunscreen disrupts this solar harmony

It’s not just designed to block UV-B to prevent sunburn. It also blocks UV-A, which penetrates deeper into the skin and serves different pro-health physiological roles

By filtering these wavelengths out, you fundamentally distort the natural spectral balance that your biology depends on

This is identical to what happens with low-emission glass. It filters out specific parts of the spectrum (mainly UV-B, some UV-A, and a large amount of red and infrared), all while leaving blue light untouched to where you get an artificial spectrum of mainly UV-A and blue in isolation together without the balancing forces of red and infrared

This combination, as shown in the famous Truck Driver case study and beyond, is a skin destroyer and skin cancer creator

We’ve established that traditional chemical or mineral sunscreens are designed to block UV-A/B, which messes with the perfect solar spectrum

Even worse, there are newer formulations out there that now block infrared light (IR-A). These are typically branded as “infrared-protective” sunscreens and is a huge mistake due to all of the established benefits of infrared along with its incredible safety profile

But here’s the kicker:

Nearly all sunscreen options don’t even touch blue light. Blue light is high energy, penetrates the skin deeply, and can contribute to excess oxidative stress, especially when UV wavelengths (which stimulate antioxidant defenses like melanin) are blocked

When you wear sunscreen, you’re changing the light environment your skin experiences. This inevitably has consequences for all of the light-sensing mechanisms within the body from mitochondria to melanin production to circadian skin clocks
