I think that Putin understands he can't fully occupy Ukraine. It’s just that sometimes he shares messages with our partners that are not what he truly thinks.
He suffers tremendous losses and doesn't have enough well-trained people on the battlefield. He is trying to find an off-ramp that looks like a victory. That's why he is trying to push us out of Donbas via diplomacy, through dialogue with the United States.
Because to fully occupy Donbas he would need to sacrifice between 300,000 and 1 million people, depending on how many years they would plan the operation for. This is a huge price to pay even for Putin.

I think you overestimate the concerns of the British people. My sense is that the country is firmly behind Keir when it comes to Donald Trump. He has insulted us, interfered in our affairs and behaved as though we are expected to obey his every command. That era ended long ago.
The British public do not take kindly to being lectured or patronised. We are an independent nation with our own democratic mandate and our own interests to defend. Support for strong leadership at home is not weakness, it is recognition that our decisions are made in Westminster, not Washington.
If anyone believes that Britain should simply fall into line at the bidding of a foreign president, they have fundamentally misunderstood both our history and our electorate.
Powerful, considered, statesmanly… what we should hope for in a Prime Minister. I say again, I don’t agree with everything, there have been mistakes but boy am I glad we have him right now.
@PippaCrerar Superb news. Too late for my kids who had to struggle through all the red tape and expense but so good for today's uni students. Really happy that this has happened.
