Somalia's Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji returns his Kenyan passport, ID card and birth certificate at the Kenyan embassy in Mogadishu after President Hassan Mohamud's directives
What happened at the entrance of Ngong Racecourse at around 4 a.m. is deeply disturbing.
People were leaving an event, tired and simply trying to get home.
Instead, they found goons waiting outside, timing those coming out and ambushing them.
Some were robbed. Others were injured. Many were left frightened and traumatized.
Imagine leaving an event in the early hours of the morning, thinking about getting home safely, only to discover that a group of thugs has been waiting outside to attack you.
That is not just a security incident.
It is a frightening reminder of how vulnerable ordinary citizens can feel in Nairobi.
And this is where leadership matters.
When citizens repeatedly raise concerns about gangs, robberies, violence and insecurity, the answer cannot simply be to dismiss them.
People are not discussing security as an academic subject.
They are speaking from what they have seen, suffered and experienced.
Under @InteriorKE CS @kipmurkomen we've suffered as a nation. The CS himself is a crook full of bitterness & vengeance.
It is particularly painful when the Interior Ministry appears consumed by political confrontations while ordinary Nairobians are dealing with criminals on the streets.
Politics can wait.
Security cannot.
A mother waiting for her child to come home at 4 a.m. does not care which politician is winning an argument. She cares that her child is safe.
A young person leaving an event should not have to calculate the risk of being robbed or assaulted before deciding whether to go home.
We must stop normalising this. It's time we arm ourselves & protect one another.
The people attacked at Ngong Racecourse are not statistics.
They are someone's children, someone's friends, someone's brothers and sisters.
They went out expecting to enjoy themselves and return home safely.
They deserve justice.
They deserve protection.
And they deserve a government that takes their fear seriously.
Kenya cannot afford a situation where criminals become increasingly confident while citizens become increasingly afraid.
The first duty of government is to protect the people.
When citizens no longer feel safe in their own city tourists and investors are not safe.
Internet will never forget...
