@d_feldman A one-time ingestion of about 4 micrograms of Pu-238 as PuCl3 is correlated to a ~1% excess lifetime (50 y) increased risk of cancer (calculated with ICRP OIR data viewer). You can ingest a lot more Pu-239 or 244, for example, because they both have a much longer half-life.

Gamma interactions are probabilistic, so at high energy and a thin layer of fungus, if the intensity is high enough, some gamma photons will stop. But I imagine that it's Compton scatter (partial absorption) of gammas that's fueling the fungi
