Is it not just easier to get your liquor from trusted sources instead? Why do you like to stress yourself?

I get it. The trust level is low, and yeah yeah. That's why personal verification matters. I'm not telling you not to trust your vendor oh. I'm just giving you the tools to trust your judgment first. Your confidence is the best anti-counterfeiting measure.

Here is my quick-fire, 8-Point Checklist for liquor Authnticity;

•Check the Label: Inspect for professional printing, correct spelling, and all required information (brand, manufacturer address, ABV).
 Low quality product packaging is a red flag.

•Verify the Codes: Look for a clear Batch Number and/or an Expiry Date printed on the packaging, which confirms traceability and shelf life.

•Trust your Eyes (Liquid): Authentic liquor has a consistent texture and color. If the drink looks cloudy, too dark, or thin, it may be adulterated.

•Scrutinize the Brand: Counterfeiters often mimic packaging and logos. I check the brand name and logo for perfect alignment with the genuine product.

•Know the Origin: The bottle should clearly state the place of production or origin and it should match the brand's history.

•Filter the Price: I am wary of ridiculously low prices or massive discounts. The price of a legitimate product reflects its quality and production costs.

•Taste with Caution: If the drink has an unusual or off-putting taste or smell, it may be fake.

•Choose Proven Vendors: The most straightforward defense: I always buy from reputable stores or authorized distributors that have a public reputation to protect.
Using these simple steps empowers one to have confidence in the transaction and the product. I don't rely solely on reputation; I verify it myself.

When random people say stuff like 'All the liquor in Nigeria is fake,' I genuinely wonder how the 226.46 Million 9-litre cases of total Alcohol imported into Nigeria in 2024 are accounted for.

That is the official market volume, complete with verifiable records at the Nigerian Ports and associated excise tax authorities. So how?

I know we are sharp guys, but you can't pay excise duties on products you didn't bring in. If anything, it is the other way around. These massive numbers prove the system is overwhelmingly dominated by legitimate imports.

To grasp the staggering size of the original drinks market in Nigeria: If we take the total volume of liquor imports into Nigeria and imagine sitting one regular bottle per seat in Real Madrid's magnificent Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, we would need to fill that stadium over 32,600 times! That is a true estimate of how much original, certified liquor is in this market.

So, yes. Original drinks are pouring into the country, facilitated by legitimate brand partners, and the documentation is clear.

While counterfeit activity exists, industry data confirms that the overwhelming volume of drinks flowing through legal channels is authentic. The genuine market is colossal, robust, and the primary source of consumption. But…

Since several estimates and research show that over 5% of mainstream drinks out there may be adulterated, how can one ensure one is buying the original then?

In one sentence: Make your liquor purchases from vendors that have a reputation to protect!
