In 1990 less than one-third (27%) of Americans had three or fewer close friends.
In 2021 that number jumped to 49%, a nearly twofold increase.
Why is the role of friends in American social life experiencing a pronounced decline? THREAD
@slporc2@p_millerd IIRC, Twitter bought Nuzzel a few years ago and this was their standalone product. If it is now Blue-exclusive, you can do the same thing with Tweet Shelf. I love it because I can keep up on what's being talked about without spending so much time scrolling through the garbage
@KevinWGlass It's hard to stay hot through 60 days of playoffs. Every series is best of 7, so if you can win four consecutive best-of-seven rounds, I think you've earned the Cup and the title of "best" team
@michaelbd@eric_b55 If nuclear powers can take whatever they like from non-nuclear powers, the obvious conclusion (from their POV) is that all non-nuclear countries should develop nukes. It's the only way they can have some protection
When I reviewed the damage for the Antonovski bridge, I remarked that the Kerch Strait bridge would constitute a more difficult challenge. That challenge has been accepted (by… someone) and the result is as good as we could expect, even though the bridge is repairable IMO (2/x)
@RealNikM @Martel2112@McCormickProf If you judge that bigotry is on the decline thanks to these efforts: keep at it! If not, one might be forgiven for wondering whether the shouters care more about feeling righteous than actually making progress in their professed goal
@RealNikM @Martel2112@McCormickProf Bigots have been called out more frequently and more publicly in recent years than at any other time. Are you seeing positive results from this strategic choice? Is the world getting less bigoted thanks to all the shouting about bigotry?
@robchappell365 I'll never understand how the same people who are loudest about how irredeemably racist the country is also think they are more likely to garner the support to pass redistributive policies by focusing on the disproportionate impact by race
@robchappell365 It's fun to be glib on Twitter, but the people most hurt by unnecessarily increasing the salience of race when talking about programs that help the poor are not white people or their feelings.
One obvious reason is that states doing nothing more than resisting invasion in a war of aggression are not escalating that war, however long they resist. Ukraine cannot reasonably be said to be escalating the war simply by refusing to capitulate.
@mattyglesias I grew up in the church and was 100% certain in my beliefs and that my cause was just and true. When I lost my faith I de-radicalized. If I was wrong about something I was so sure of, I couldn't go back to being so sure about anything.
