Mark Cuban sold his company to Yahoo for $5.7 billion in 1999. Overnight, he was a billionaire. There was just one problem: Yahoo paid him in its own stock, he was banned from selling it for six months, and that stock was sitting on a bubble that was about to pop.

So he was a billionaire who couldn't actually reach his money. He owned 14.6 million shares of Yahoo, worth around $1.4 billion, and he couldn't turn a single one into cash. Even after the six months ran out, selling them was its own trap. Nobody buys 14.6 million shares at once. The second he started dumping that much stock, the price would slide before he finished, dragging his fortune down with it.

Here is what he did instead. He bought insurance on his own stock.

You can buy a contract that locks in a guaranteed price someone has to pay you for your shares later. Cuban locked his in at $85 each. From then on, no matter how far Yahoo fell, he could still sell at $85 and walk away with more than a billion dollars. The problem is that this kind of protection costs money, and insuring $1.4 billion is expensive.

He covered the cost in a strange way. He sold off his claim to Yahoo's biggest gains. He signed a second contract that said if the stock ever climbed past $205, someone else could buy his shares at that price and keep anything above it. He was betting it would never get there, and the money from that bet paid for his insurance almost exactly. The whole setup cost him nothing.

For a while, he looked like a fool. Yahoo kept climbing, blew past $205, and ran all the way to about $237. He had locked himself out of a fortune in gains, right at the top. Then the bubble burst. Yahoo went into freefall and crashed to roughly $13. Almost everyone holding it got wiped out. Cuban's $85 floor held the entire way down, and he walked off with his money still in his pocket.

The company that set all of this in motion never made it. Yahoo killed Broadcast .com in 2002, three years after paying $5.7 billion for it. Yahoo itself was sold off in 2017 for about $4.5 billion, less than it once paid for Cuban's company alone. Selling made him a billionaire on paper. The insurance trade is the only reason he kept it.

The quiet moments are often the most important. Last night just before Cabinet members walked onto the House floor for the President’s State of the Union, we joined together in prayer, giving all thanks and praise to God, and praying for the clarity and strength to listen to Him, serve Him, and do His will.

This was me yesterday in court for a divorce proceeding at the High Court of Lagos State in Badagry.

The wife filed for divorce.

The husband hired me to defend him.

He never wanted the divorce, but he had to defend himself.

But unlike other divorce cases that I have done, this one ended on a POSITIVE note.

The couple resolved their differences and reconciled.

We, their lawyers, were in Court yesterday just to inform the Judge of the development and end the case.

There was no dramatic, damaging and exposing trial.

Case was settled amicably, and marriage continues.

Again, this is the first time I would be experiencing a divorce where the couple said they are no longer interested in divorce.

Basically, the wife's family, particularly her father, intervened and somehow she changed her mind about the divorce.

The marriage has produced two lovely and cute Igbo boys (they are Igbos).

The first fight in Court was over those two minor boys.

My client (the husband) was ready to fight until his last kobo for custody of those two boys.

And if custody would not be given to him by the Judge (because the boys are still minors), he wanted clear and strict terms of custody imposed on the wife.

He also wanted unfettered right of access to the boys and his co-parenting rights.

He really loves his two sons. Even while the case was ongoing, he bought them things and paid their school fees without hesitation, amongst other school needs. He sent money directly to their mother for the boys.

He'd buy a cake and send them to the boys on their birthdays.

Now that they've settled their differences, the boys are about to travel abroad for their education.

What I sort of learned from this case is that WHO YOUR WOMAN LISTENS TO MATTERS A LOT.

I would not be surprised if his wife filed for divorce AFTER listening to some feminists on social media or read some posts by some feminist ilks on social media or listened to some of her single or divorced friends.

But, perhaps, after a while, reality dawned on her and the voice of an elder brought her back to reason.

I am not surprised that she terminated the divorce proceeding midway because I have to say that her husband is a VERY GOOD MAN.

TOUGH BUT GOOD MAN. (Most good men are tough and principled men).

If she had gone through with the divorce (of which her grounds for seeking divorce were very weak), she would have regretted that decision for the rest of her life, in silence.

That's why I always make the point that the fewer the friends a woman has, the better for her love life or marriage.

Many women are in social media groups that vilify marriage every day. They follow influencers who have nothing good to say about marriage or men in general.

If your woman follows such energies, she would think being divorced or being single is a flex. It's not.

Social media is NOT real life.

Courtroom is real life.

And our parents understand real life.

The older I get, the better I am understanding why our parents wanted us to marry and marry EARLY, and why they wanted us to have children.

Truly, some things or insights won't come to you until you attain a certain season in your life.

A time will come, you will understand why your parents wanted you to marry and have children. Trust me.

The Yoruba Elders say that what an elder would see sitting down, a child won't see it while standing.

You won't understand it now until you attain a particular season in your life.

But for now, enjoy your feminist rants and boss lady life on social media.

The silent cries will come later.
