Customs Honours Retiring DCG Omale, Celebrates Legacy of Service

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has honoured retiring Deputy Comptroller-General (DCG) Musa Omale, with the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, and members of the Management Team paying tribute to his years of dedicated service, professionalism, and contributions to the Service.

The ceremony, held on Friday, 5 June 2026, at the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, brought together senior officers who reflected on the retiring officer’s career and legacy in the Service.

Speaking at the event, CGC Adeniyi said the Service’s tradition of celebrating officers at retirement provides an opportunity to share goodwill messages, offer advice, and recognise their contributions as they begin a new phase of life.

He described DCG Omale as an officer known for his love of books, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to personal development.

Reflecting on the importance of legacy in public service, Adeniyi noted that officers are remembered by the impact of their actions and conduct.

“When we are in service, we leave imprints and footprints because we never know how people will make reference to them later,” Adeniyi said.

He advised the retiring officer to exercise caution in future investments and engagements, warning against ventures that are not properly understood, while praying for good health and continued opportunities for him to contribute to national development.

DCG Timi Bomodi recalled meeting DCG Omale 35 years ago when they both arrived in Port Harcourt as attachés, describing him as an officer whose character remained consistent throughout his career.

According to Bomodi, the retiring officer distinguished himself through humility, intellect, and dependability, earning the respect of colleagues across the Service.

“You have remained yourself all through. You are reliable and dependable, and your word is your bond,” Bomodi said.

Director of Legal Services, Smart Akande, also reflected on their time together in Port Harcourt, where they worked on prosecution matters.

He described Omale as articulate, diligent, and quiet, noting that his cooperation contributed significantly to the successful handling of several cases.

“I will not be surprised if he becomes a professor after retirement,” Akande said.

Also, Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs Nafiu Isiaku commended Omale’s passion for learning, attention to detail, commitment to excellence, and willingness to mentor younger officers.

They noted that despite attaining senior ranks in the Service, he remained approachable, disciplined, and dedicated to knowledge-sharing.

Responding, DCG Omale expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General, members of the Management Team, and colleagues for the honour accorded him.

He described himself as a calm person who approaches life steadily and attributed his interest in academia to experiences gained during his early years in the Service.

The retired DCG also recalled representing his superior at a board meeting at his younger age, an experience he described as a defining moment in his professional journey.

Omale pledged to remain available whenever called upon to support the Service and commended the Comptroller-General of Customs for his listening leadership style.

Clarification on My Political Position

We have noted recent media reports and discussions suggesting a possible realignment within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to the current challenges facing the party.

In light of the misleading narratives in the public domain, I wish to state categorically that no final decision has been taken regarding my political future or that of my political associates.

The recent Supreme Court judgment, while affirming the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC), also remitted the matter back to the High Court. This has left the party in a precarious position.

In addition, the Federal High Court has recently ruled to delegitimise the party’s recent convention. The Attorney General of the Federation has also strangely applied to a Federal High Court to deregister the ADC.

We left the NNPP due to externally influenced legal problems that made our stay perilous. The ADC has now been also forced into this difficulty.

Consequently, like other major stakeholders, we have commenced wide-ranging consultations — including with leaders from the NDC, PRP and others to explore the best options for protecting our democratic interests. We shall announce our decision in the soonest possible time.

On the issue of presidential candidacy, I wish to recall my consistent record as a committed democrat. In the 2014 APC presidential primary, I came second to President Muhammadu Buhari (whom I fully supported to victory), with Atiku Abubakar third, Rochas Okorocha fourth, and the late Sam Nda-Isaiah fifth. Similarly, in 2019, I contested the PDP presidential ticket and immediately supported the winner, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, serving as the campaign’s coordinator in the North. I have always placed national interest and party unity above personal ambition.

Furthermore, the ADC is yet to zone its presidential ticket or take any decision on a candidate. I have therefore neither declared any intention to run for president nor endorsed any aspirant. All speculations to the contrary are premature and unfounded.

My absence from the two recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to unavoidable personal commitments. I promptly communicated my apologies to the party leadership.

We shall continue to engage constructively at all levels. Any definitive position on our political direction will be communicated formally through official channels at the appropriate time.

Dear Esteemed Leaders,

Nigeria stands at a defining crossroads. The incumbent administration under President Bola Tinubu has presided over deepening hardship, mounting insecurity, and a crisis of public trust. The 2027 presidential election offers us a historic opportunity, not merely to field a candidate, but to rally the entire opposition behind a figure who can unify our fractured nation, ignite mass participation, and deliver victory. That figure is Peter Obi.

We urge you, without hesitation, to adopt Peter Obi as the ADC’s preferred presidential candidate and the unifying banner of the opposition. His candidacy is not just strategic but also it is transformative. Here is why it represents our clearest path to victory:

1. National Unity and Healing:
Peter Obi’s appeal transcends ethnicity, religion, and region. An Igbo leader who has already built unprecedented bridges to the North, South-West, and South-South, he alone can heal the dangerous North-South divide that has weakened our democracy for decades. This updated guide introduces several consumer-friendly policies designed to enhance financial inclusion and transparency across the Nigerian financial system.
Here are five key banking services that you can now enjoy without paying a single kobo:
1. Reactivating or Closing Your Account
Under the new regulations, banks are no longer permitted to charge you for reactivating a dormant account.
2. Receiving Your Monthly Statement of Account
Staying informed about your finances is now cost-free. L
However, Special Request for Printed Statement of Account (Request in a manner other than agreed on mandatory issuance has been pegged at a maximum of N20 per page.
3. Small Inter-Bank Electronic Transfers
To encourage micro-payments and digital adoption, the CBN has eliminated fees for small electronic fund transfers. Transactions between N0 and N5,000 now carry no charge. For transfers between N5,000 and N50,000, the fee is capped at a low rate of N10.
4. Using Your Own Bank’s ATM (On-Us Transactions)
Whenever you use an ATM provided by your own financial institution—referred to as an “On-Us” transaction, there is no charge for the withdrawal. Furthermore, performing non-cash transactions such as intra-bank transfers at these ATMs is also free.
5. Issuing Virtual Cards and Managing Your PIN

OUR LAWS AND DEMOCRACY MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL TIMES

The Nigerian Bar Association has closely monitored recent political and legal developments as the nation gradually approaches the 2027 General Elections. These developments, particularly those arising from the interpretation and potential application of provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, raise serious constitutional, democratic, and rule-of-law concerns that require immediate intervention.

We particularly deprecate the disturbing involvement by lawyers and courts in the internal affairs of political parties despite the clear provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, which stipulates in Section 83 of the Act that “No court in Nigeria shall entertain jurisdiction over any suit or matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party.”

Not only are courts denied jurisdiction to entertain any matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party, but they are also precluded from granting any interim or interlocutory injunction even where any action has been brought in violation of the Act. The section further provides that “Where such an action is brought in negation of this provision, no interim or interlocutory injunction shall be entertained by the Court, but the Court shall suspend its ruling and deliver it at the stage of final judgment and shall give accelerated hearing to the matter”.

What we now see are situations where actions are not only instituted in Courts by lawyers in clear violation of the Act, but Courts purportedly grant interim and/or interlocutory injunctions in clear contempt of statutory provisions of the law. This does not augur well for our democracy. Democracy will not thrive in a situation where lawyers and courts take actions and decisions that not only negate our laws but also do violence to them. This emerging trend of subverting the clear letters of the Electoral Act and dragging courts into the internal affairs of political parties through disingenuous litigation, forum shopping, and malafide applications designed to secure undemocratic political advantage, bodes no good for our democracy. Such practices, if not immediately curbed, would directly contradict the clear intendment of the Electoral Act and risk transforming the judicial processes into avenues for political score-settling or electoral manipulation.

We must reiterate that these provisions were clearly designed to curb abuse of court processes and discourage forum shopping in political disputes. This is therefore why the NBA is concerned that the abuse, misapplication, or selective deployment of these provisions may create opportunities for manipulation capable of undermining democratic competition and shrinking the political space.

Members of the Bar are reminded that they are Ministers in the Temple of Justice and not political agents seeking judicial endorsement of partisan objectives. The filing of actions intended to draw courts into internal political party disputes, particularly where jurisdiction is expressly excluded, constitutes an abuse of court process and a violation of professional responsibility.

The NBA will take firm steps to deter such conduct. Lawyers who deliberately file actions aimed at procuring judicial interference in intra-party affairs, or who seek ex parte or interlocutory orders in clear violation of statutory provisions, risk facing disciplinary proceedings. We will not hesitate to present petitions before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) against any Legal Practitioner found to be engaging in such conduct. This will be pursued decisively to serve as a deterrent and to preserve the sanctity of the judicial process.

The Nigerian judiciary must stay vigilant and resist being drawn into political theatrics. Courts should firmly decline invitations, no matter how artfully crafted, to intervene in matters the law explicitly bars them from.
