So some fun updates:
- I can no longer see images (they're all replaced by links, videos still work though)
- Every so often, I'm unable to send a tweet (typically happens when I try to send a photo, but it has also failed on text tweets as well)
- I've heard from others that if you log out of your account, you won't be able to log back in
It never occurred to me until now. If you ever try to leave the Apple ecosystem, thereโs a good chance youโll forget to disable iMessage for your phone number, and youโll never get messages from iPhone usersโฆ
fun fact: the iMessage deregistration page on Appleโs website hasnโt been updated in about 12 years, but Apple updated the images last year- so the page now has an iPhone 16 Pro screenshot in an interface designed in 2014 lol
Thereโs a term for this business practice. Itโs called a loss leader. The idea is that you sell an item with the intention of loosing money on said item in an effort to increase foot traffic and increase sales on other items in the store.
Same reason they sell gasoline, itโs not to offer you the cheapest gas in town, itโs to get you to drive to the warehouse store.
In America, a warehouse store. A fully roasted chicken costs five dollars, the raw chicken beside it costs seven, and I stood between them like a man between two truths.
Golden. Hot. Seasoned. Spinning in glory under the lights, in a line of its brothers. Four dollars and ninety-nine cents.
I checked the raw birds. Seven dollars. Pale. Cold. You must do everything yourself.
This is not commerce. Commerce does not move backward. Somewhere in this building, mathematics lies defeated.
I asked the man at the counter. "How is the cooked bird cheaper than the raw bird?"
"Been five bucks forever. They keep it that way."
"But the store loses."
"Yep. On purpose."
On purpose. I held my receipt with both hands.
In my land, a lord who lowered the price of rice in a hard winter was remembered for generations. They built him a small shrine. This store does it every day, with chicken, and tells no one.
A woman behind me grew tired of my reverence. "It's just a chicken, sir."
It is not just a chicken. It is a wound the merchant takes on purpose, so that anyone, on any day, with five dollars, eats like a lord. The bird is the message. The price is the vow.
I will confess: I bought two. I did not need two. The second was not hunger. It was gratitude, and it was delicious.
Some prices are not prices. They are promises.
I return every week now. I take one bird. I bow toward the deli, briefly, so as not to alarm the staff. They have begun nodding back.
The vow holds. The bird turns. Five dollars.

Typing 1.1.1.1 is an easy way to get around public WiFi login systems, also known as captive portals. When you connect to one of these networks, you are not actually online yet. The network intercepts your connection and sends you to a login page where you enter your username and password. Most devices try to detect this and show the login screen for you.
The problem is that newer devices, especially iPhones, do not always show the login popup when needed. They run background checks to see if you are online, but if these checks fail or do not work right, the login page does not appear. This is why you might be connected to WiFi but still cannot open any websites.
When you type 1.1.1.1 into your browser, you are making a direct request to an IP address instead of a website name. This skips the need for DNS and, more importantly, creates a request that the captive portal can catch and redirect. This way, you make the network show you the login page.
It may seem like you are trying to reach Cloudflareโs DNS service, but that is not the point. You are just triggering the networkโs interception system. This works because it gets around your deviceโs sometimes unreliable automatic detection and creates a request the portal can handle.
There is also a security side to think about. Networks that need manual fixes like this are often not set up well. Before you log in, they can still see some types of traffic, especially DNS and unencrypted requests, and may block or mess with others.
