So why can it be so difficult to get the kind of care we actually want at the end of life?

In my @ProgressPotent1 conversation with Dr. Karen Lutfey Spencer, PhD - @KarenLutfe51580 - medical sociologist and author of Your Good Death: Why End-of-Life Healthcare Is So Difficult and How to Make It Work for You, we explore a fundamental paradox of modern healthcare:

Having choices doesn't necessarily mean having control.

Dr. Lutfey Spencer argues that end-of-life decisions are shaped by far more than the wishes of the patient - from medical culture and the “treatment imperative” to insurance, fragmented care, and the way palliative care and hospice are introduced.

We also talk about the “terrible choice” - the false idea that patients must eventually choose between continuing treatment and “giving up” and entering hospice.

And perhaps most importantly, we talk about the people who can easily disappear from the conversation:

The caregivers.

If someone wants to die at home, who is going to provide the care? Who has the time? Who can afford to take time away from work? And what happens when a family's resources determine whether a patient's wishes can actually be honored?

This is ultimately a conversation about medicine, autonomy, caregiving, inequality - and what it really means to have a good death.

Did I forget to tell you about the @Pella_News windows I bought from @lowes Sept 2021 -- yes 2021 for $8,652.12 and I am still waiting for parts? I am told they will be delivered in May 2023.

I bought a side & screen door @Lowes 6/17/22 for the doors and installation I paid $2,062.64. They installed the doors INCORRECTLY in July 2022. I trusted @Lowes so much at the time that I even scanned the receipt upside down.
