I actually strongly disagree with this one. For tabular datasets, with which I have the most experience, synthetic data is worse than useless. I’ve heard similar stories from people who use it for training autonomous vehicles. When it comes to textual data, from my experience even data augmentation is orders of magnitude harder to do than for visual systems. Granted, I’ve never trained an LLM from scratch, but I’d be really shocked if all of a sudden synthetic data there becomes a game changer. Just my 2c.
