Elon Musk has had a lot to say about the grooming gangs scandal. We looked at 24 hours on Musk's X timeline and found a range of false and misleading information being amplified. Produced by Catherine Karelli, Shayan Sardarizadeh and Jake Horton. Graphics by Jacqueline Galvin.

We wrote a couple months ago about how "impression zombies" - people outside Japan who post in Japanese purely for money - have taken advantage of Twitter's slow dismantling of moderation controls to convert panic into profit.

All beings want freedom, and all beings want to live in joy.
We all know this.
A good person finds happiness in the happiness of others, doing no harm in the process. But while goodness grows in shared joy, evil feeds on suffering—and naked greed.
Some of you made a choice.
Some chose hope and compassion.
Some chose to follow a man who is cruel, who takes pleasure in harm, who is a rapist, a racist, a conman, an insurrectionist. A deceiver who meets with a cruel dictator—Vladimir Putin—behind closed doors, betraying our ideals and, by extension, our nation. Maybe you knew. Maybe you didn’t. Or maybe you just didn’t care enough to act.
The thing about choices is this: they define you. Not just who you are now, but who you’re going to be. And in time, the harm you align yourself with has a way of coming back around. When it does, it doesn’t just touch you—it curses the people you love. You will be betrayed, just as you betrayed yourself.
Think back on the choices you made, the harm you allowed. When the suffering you helped sustain lands at your door, understand this: there will be no forgiveness.
There will be only one way out—to atone. To step up and do something good. Something kind. Something courageous.
Take some time. Think on it. Not lightly, but deeply. I’ll check in on you from time to time. Appeasement is simple; atonement is difficult. Cruelty is easy; compassion is hard work. One path leads to temporary pleasure and profit; the other leads to joy and an unshakable inner peace.
Over the next four years, decide who and how you really want to be and what you’re going to do about it. Because that’s the choice that will matter.
