@KurtFlew @nblake22 @SusieMGoss You are correct, Avanti run some 5 car sets, they can double them up to form 10 cars as you've seen. For instance Euston to Holyhead trains are often 10 car to Chester then they detach one set at Chester and one 5 car set goes forward to Holyhead as demand eases on the train

@TheDeafTribe @HenleyTrains @SusieMGoss The trains are fixed formations. You can not add extra coaches. If they had spare trains I'm sure they'd run a relief service but the assets are sweated and there's no spare trains hanging about.

@Wilbert90210 @MarcPilot75 @SusieMGoss It's not an aeroplane. Open tickets and particularly return legs of journeys are turn up and go. That's often what people want. GwR can not know how many will turn up. You're buying a journey, not a seat.

@MintSauceSarnie @nblake22 @SusieMGoss There is no such thing as overbooking, it's not a plane. Most return tickets are "open return" meaning you can travel at any time on the return journey. That suits people but clearly GWR can not know how many will turn up. Historic data will give a clue but it's not over booking.

In BR days of old they could possibly rustle a whole set of carriages and run a "Relief" service. Those days are gone, the assets are sweated, there are not spare resources sat ready to cover such instances.

If you book return from Plymouth to Padd the return is likely an open return meaning you can choose which service you return on. GWR do not know how many will turn up. It is not "overbooked". You can book a seat though.
