The number of Ukrainian cultural sites hit in Russia’s overnight attack on Kyiv continues to rise, with the Mystetskyi Arsenal on fire this morning.
The complex is one of Ukraine’s flagship museums.
This attack tonight on the Monastery by the Russians in Kyiv makes no sense. It has a parallel with the bombing of London’s St. Paul’s in 1940 by the Germans. It won’t work. Someone tell me the military necessity of the Russian attack. There is none.
It depends. When I think of 'high trust' society, I think more of Finland/Scandinavia. The US? Well, sort of, but only with huuuuuge caveats. What the US has is not so much 'high trust', as lots of resources, lots of opportunities, and lots of second, third, fourth etc chances
@Sam_Cranny Can you explain broadly what the training strategies are for armies that have never been exposed to drone intensive warfare? Do they train for the types of weapons available now or do they 'wait and see' for the technology to stabilize after the Ukraine war?
#CoinWednesday - This small coin, made of copper-alloy bronze, was minted in Gaza during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. It is part of an intriguing series that commemorates Hadrian’s visit to Gaza in AD 130. This coin specifically commemorates Hadrian's presence in the city, directly linking it to the emperor's notable journey in the east.
The emperor's arrival in Gaza was celebrated with ceremonies, commemorated through coinage and Hadrianic games, and signified the start of a new era in the local calendar. This coin is dated to the 5th year after Hadrian's visit, corresponding to AD 133/4.
The obverse of the coin features a laureate and draped bust of Emperor Hadrian, facing right, along with the Greek inscription Α ΚΑ ΤΡ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟϹ, which is the abbreviated imperial title of Hadrian. On the reverse side, Hercules is depicted standing nude, with his right hand resting on his club. The inscription ΓΑΖΑ Ε ΕΠΙ ΔϘΡ translates to "Gaza, year 5 visit, year 194." "Year 194" corresponds to Gaza's local civic era, a dating system used for the city's coinage.

Coin from my collection.
Roman bronze surgical tools for a doctor found in Sontheim an der Brenz and date to 2nd-3rd C AD. Obviously medical care back then varied a lot. Interestingly, gladiators had high quality medical care to prolong the investments of owners. Now in Limesmuseum in Aalen, Germany.
🦔Meta put billions of dollars of AI chips inside fabric tents and powered them with its own gas turbines. Five went up outside New Albany, Ohio in two months. The permanent buildings next door took two to three years. Behind-the-meter power at data centers could hit 13 gigawatts by 2027, more than enough to run New York City. All on a $145 billion capex budget.
My Take
Two months for a tent. Two to three years for a building. Meta went with the tents. A few days ago they cut 2,212 people from Menlo Park because the budget had to go toward AI infrastructure. Fabric structures in a field, full of $60,000 chips, with gas turbines next door. The permanent building will come eventually. The people probably won’t.
These tent data centers run on private power because the public grid can’t deliver fast enough. IBM’s CEO said this week the revenue to justify the spending probably doesn’t exist. Broadcom’s CEO said the productivity hasn’t arrived. And Meta’s response is fabric tents on a $145 billion budget. I’ve covered a lot of this industry and I’ve never seen this much money move this fast with this little proof it pays off.

13.04.2014: Heavily armed, masked men storm a Ministry of the Interior office in Kramatorsk. Their mission is to overthrow the local Ukrainian government and bring the city under Russian control.
Ukraine’s drone forces have pulled off something genuinely significant at Donetsk Airport. The 14th Regiment of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces has established what they call “fire control” over the Russian-held facility, destroying launch pads, vehicles, and supply depots in a sustained campaign that has rendered the airport effectively unusable.
The target was not chosen at random. Russia had transformed the airport into a dual-purpose military asset: a launch site for Shahed-type attack drones and a logistics hub feeding front-line operations in the Donetsk region.
Taking it out of commission disrupts both functions simultaneously.
What makes this operation notable is its place within a larger strategic framework. Ukraine is pursuing what the BBC describes as a “logistics lockdown” strategy, using AI-guided drones to systematically dismantle Russian supply infrastructure behind the front lines rather than concentrating solely on direct battlefield engagements. The logic is straightforward: an army that cannot resupply cannot sustain offensive pressure.
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces described this as the first operation of its kind in modern military history, a claim that reflects how novel drone-on-infrastructure warfare at this scale and precision actually is.
Ukraine is increasingly using autonomous, and AI-assisted drones not just to harass but to degrade Russian operational capacity at depth.
En el antiguo Egipto, como en otras culturas antiguas, el fruto de la granada simbolizaba la fertilidad y la resurrección. Granadas egipcias de fayenza y pasta vítrea (s. XV y s. XII a.C.).
Also carved c.1600 – 1400 BC and found in the Knossos Palace, the bull-leaping fresco depicts a spectacular Bronze Age sport.📸 by me at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
The museum’s description reads: “There are three participants, two white-skinned women and a brown-skinned man. One of the female athletes is restraining the bull by the horns to slow it and prevent the leaper, who is performing a dangerous backward somersault, from being gored. The second female athlete, behind the bull, is waiting with outstretched arms to catch the leaper as he lands.”
All hell has broken loose at Putin's Economic Forum after Steven Seagal has reportedly eaten several members of the Chinese delegation.

The walls of Queen Nefertari's tomb has two basic types of decorative wall painting. Scenes of the Queen facing the gods and goddesses and other scenes showing images and magical texts from the famous Book of the Dead
The most common examples portray Nefertari interacting with Egyptian gods, often those connected with their beliefs about the afterlife.
Often she offers food, drinks, incense, or other gifts. This imagery is similar to the decoration in temples where Pharaoh himself performs these offering rituals. The tomb images reflect Nefertari's privilege, influence, and favor with her husband Ramesses II who made this tomb for his wife.
She also worshiped the gods in scenes from the temple Ramesses built for her at Abu Simbel in ancient Nubia
Pictures
1 Nefertari worshiping the ibis-headed god Thoth
2 the falcon headed god Horus leads the Queen holding her hand
3 She makes food and wine offerings to the goddess Hathor
4 from her temple at Abu Simbel, a wall carving shows Nefertari worshiping the goddess Anuket who has a crown of ostrich feathers

Irish politicians are avoiding questions about Aughinish. Patrick O’Donovan refuses to answer my calls. The refinery is in his constituency
He says the Russian owned plant is not connected to Russia’s war machine, without showing evidence. They want this to blow over. It won’t
I’ve been investigating the russian refinery for days now and the story gets darker and darker. The shipments are sent to Siberia, smelted, and sold to the russian company ‘ASK’. This company distributes aluminium directly to Russia’s missile & drone manufacturers.
A #Roman frying pan, found in Usk (Wales), made & used about 1700-1800 years ago - perhaps by a soldier garrisoned in southern Wales. It even has a folding handle for easier transport & storage! #Archaeology
Some images from Queen Nefertari' tomb show symbism seen on papyrus scrolls of the Book of the Dead.
There wasn't room for the entire Book on its walls, but these scenes airded the Queen' journey through the Underworld
In one scene the goddesses Isis and Nepthys appear as kites mourning Osiris on his bier inside a shrine.
Kites are raptors whose high pitched cries were similar to the sound of the goddesses mourning their dead brother Osiris
Another scene has Nefertari herself sitting in a shrine playing the ancient board game Senet. Sent means "(the game of) Passing"
It represents the dead queen's journey through the Underworld and the obstacles she faced.
Another image shows her with a bird's body, the classic image of the deceased's soul
