Ann wasn't just an annual Christmas card; she phoned, texted, emailed, and assiduously kept in touch, always thoughtful and kind as well as robust in her political updates and latest thoughts. I got a passing mention in her autobiography over a shared experience of Michael Howard's dark side, and she's been a dear friend for over 20 years. I loved Ann. She was nothing like the public caricature. I shall miss writing this house name and address every year, and I'll miss her scalpel-like expressions of opinion. But her murder has just floored me. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

Anne was a force of nature, both in Parliament and public life. She was never afraid to express her views, and unlike many politicians, you were never in any doubt about what she believed. She was deeply committed to her faith, strongly opposed to assisted dying and a passionate supporter of marriage.

I was initially surprised by the strength of her position on Brexit and never believed she needed to leave the Conservative Party to make that case, but once she took a position, she pursued it with absolute conviction.

Her later television career revealed a completely unexpected and humorous side to the formidable Anne many of us knew in Parliament. We disagreed on many issues, but she was utterly her own person: forceful, direct and an unforgettable figure in British public life.
