Reading Ewen’s piece felt like hearing someone in the next room describe the very same beast you’ve been wrestling for years. That strange jolt of recognition when you realise the creature that’s been gnawing at your world is busy chewing through someone else’s too.

And before anyone rolls their eyes and mutters, “Here we go, economics”… trust me, this isn’t dry. From where I’m standing, everything Ewen says about the Keynesian economic orthodoxy could be lifted straight into the harm-reduction world that rules Scottish drug policy. Different jargon, same mindset. Same reflexes. Same blind spots.

He lays it out plainly. The economic orthodoxy has done to growth and enterprise exactly what the harm-reduction orthodoxy has done to addiction: smothered initiative, rewarded failure, and built a managerial priesthood that somehow convinces itself that stagnation counts as progress so long as there are enough meetings about it.

Underneath both systems sits the same quiet set of beliefs. The system knows best. People can’t be trusted. Decline can be administered like a long-term prescription. And if you just hire enough experts or whip up another strategy document, perhaps the crisis caused by the last lot of experts will magically sort itself out.

Ewen’s point is simple and devastating: management is not recovery. Control is not hope. And any society that stops believing in its own people will, sooner or later, stop producing anything worth believing in.

I don't think I've ever said this publicly and directly but I think the West is absolutely screwed if it loses Christianity.

Explaining this in full would require an entire book. But I've thought about it a lot over the years and reached this conclusion.

It's like removing the foundations of a building but pridefully expecting it to remain standing forever... All while enemies both inside and outside are trying to knock the building over.
